My Self-Summary

Hello! I'm in my second year of uni, studying Eng Lit, and it's great fun. The only problem is I've been overseas up until a year ago, so I'm looking to meet more people.

I'm a bit of a geek - love reading, especially sf/f, playing video games, provided there's a console around. I love interactive fiction in particular, and though I don't know every piece of IF just yet, I'm working on it! I even used to MUD for a time, until I realised I was staying up until 7am (up until, not up from) on the thing, which, well, made it a mild addiction. *cough* And I'm into manga and anime too.

I also like distance running and if there's a piano, I'll be playing it - I average a couple of hours daily practicing. I love travelling, especially if I can find a friend to go exploring with me. Playing sports and games are great fun too; I'm usually up for trying something new. (I gave rockclimbing a go recently. Awesome.)

Generally, I'm a pretty laidback person, but I can be fully focused when an important issue is at hand. I also like to keep myself occupied, and I enjoy enough hobbies/activities that I never stay bored or idle for long (and rarely turn off my computer, or have less than 5 tabs open at a time).

What I’m doing with my life

Sitting on a fence. On one side lies the Fields of Bookish Lore. On the other lies the Plains of Medical and Health Stuff. I have yet to decide which looks greener from where I sit.

In other words, I'm either going to do something in English, or go into Medicine, and I'm conveniently enrolled in a dual degree program for both.

I’m really good at

Wild conjecture about the themes of a literary text. I joke with my friends that lit crit is like lying very well - you start off with a ghost of a premise, and interpret the evidence in support of it. But it's all just good fun.

I think I'm pretty good with the piano. I have a diploma to show that at least someone else thought I could play a tune, but the skill is quite useless, since I'm very self-conscious about performing.

And I'm good at bending my fingers! Double-jointed and stuff, y'know.

And er, Tetris Attack on the SNES. And observing. I like considering the angle and colour of things, however odd that might sound. I can also do a decent sketch or two.

The first things people usually notice about me

I'm Chinese, and smile a lot.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: Mostly genre fiction, although I read almost anything. Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy, George R. R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series, Scott Lynch's Gentleman Bastard Sequence, Frederik Pohl's Gateway, Ursula le Guin's The Dispossessed, Alfred Bester's The Stars My Destination, and Susanna Clarke. I love Victorian literature too.

Interactive Fiction (because it just has to have a section of its own): Most of Andrew Plotkin/zarf's work, particularly "So Far" and "Spider and Web". "All Things Devours" by half sick of shadows, and "Rameses" by Stephen Bond are great too.

Movies: The Prestige, Forrest Gump, Pirates of the Caribbean, Before Sunset, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead... in TV series, the J-Drama Nodame Cantabile, and Firefly. And Honey and Clover/Hachimitsu to Clover is fantastic, amazingly so.

Music: Whatever's playing.

Food: I'm open. Spicy is good.

The six things I could never do without

...are a pair of good shoes, a reliable internet connection (and a computer of some sort), toilet facilities, a book, a friend, and a good hair tie.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Would it be entirely too boring to say "the future"...?

Sometimes I tend to find myself thinking in the same tone or style of the last book I read, and snatches of quasi-book conversation run through my head while I go about my daily activities.

On a typical Friday night I am

...probably talking to a friend, whether in person, over the phone, or over the internet.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I'm pretty shy about talking to people I don't know. Also, I'm actually not very talkative by nature, so if the image of two people sitting side by side each doing their own individual thing - in comfortable and companionable silence - is one familiar to you, you'll probably get along well with me.

You should message me if

...you share my interests. But of course.

Please do note that I don't always reply quickly - don't take it personally, it's most likely I'm in a busy period. I do try to reply messages as soon as I can get to them.

Also, I'm not usually contactable by the OkCupid IM, no matter if it says I'm "ON". Sorry about that.
