My self-summary
I grew up in the mountains of North Carolina, and after the dubious choice of a political science degree I wound up in DC. Then I went back and got another degree with different letters! Now I'm running around DC working for The Man.

Despite my country roots, I'm left-leaning on most things. I've learned this is very important to get out of the way early in conversations in DC.

I'm one of those people who is constantly interested in everything around them. I spend a lot of time on blogs like Cracked and Popsci trying to feed the brain. I'm also one of those people who can ask you how your day is going and actually want to hear your response.

I work for the government, and a phrase I've always wanted to say is "I'm from the federal government and I'm here to help!" So far I haven't had the chance.

I like to stay active - kayaking, softball, golf, tennis and hiking all fit into my life from time to time, and I'm a regular gym-goer. At the same time, I love movies and games of all kinds, and my inner nerd is strong.

I try to think deep thoughts, but I keep getting distracted. My favorite quote is: "Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle."

I have an adventurous streak - I try not to say no to new things, and that once included eating scorpions from a street stall - but I'm always glad to come home.
What I’m doing with my life
Imitating the Dread Pirate Roberts at every opportunity. Plotting nefarious deeds. Finding new and exciting ways to drink new and exciting beverages in the continuously new and exciting world in which we live.

Oh, yeah, and I work for the government, unlike everyone else in DC :).
I’m really good at
Arriving places early. It's actually kind of uncanny - I've been at least five minutes early for just about everything for years, sometimes through no fault of my own. But I don't judge people for being late, because not everyone has superpowers like me, and also because holy crap Metro.
The first things people usually notice about me
I have had many people tell me that I walk like I was in the military. I wasn't, but apparently I always look like I'm very purposefully going somewhere.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Let's see...

Favorite books - I have a lot of favorites. My favorite series is the oh-so-dry-humor Discworld series by Terry Pratchett, followed by the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. I'm currently starting the Sandman Slim series.

My favorite movies are Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (which is one of the better constructed modern epics), The Abyss, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Cabin in the Woods (best horror spoof ever), Serenity, Batman: The Dark Knight, anything with Daniel Day Lewis, Blazing Saddles, and The Princess Bride.

I don't watch a ton of TV, but Mythbusters is an all-time favorite of mine, along with Firefly. My favorite shows at the moment are The Walking Dead, Supernatural, Rules of Engagement, Big Bang Theory, Archer, and South Park. I've also gotten seriously addicted to Breaking Bad on Netflix.

Musically my tastes jump around with my mood. I go for Rage Against the Machine, Disturbed, and Godsmack while writing complicated documents at work. I enjoy some pop music, and the fave band of the moment is Foster the People. In the solo artist realm my favorite singer is Kimbra (really great smokey voice).

Food wise, I'll eat just about anything. My favorite food of all time is pad thai, followed by anything on a breakfast menu.
The six things I could never do without
1. Diet Coke: I'm addicted.
2. Books: If I didn't read I wouldn't be me.
3. Good friends: No man is an island, even if we are all adrift.
4. The internet: I've watched it grow up, and it taught me most of what I know. Plus, like half of my stuff is there.
5. My family: They've always been there when I needed them, and I'm looking forward to returning the favor some day.
6. Neosporin: Because I am apparently incapable of playing simple sports without skinning at least one knee... and I'm not going to quit playing softball, so something's gotta give.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Whether it is a better use of time to fix a cog that turns a larger machine or to invent a new machine. Also elephants.
On a typical Friday night I am
Fridays for me are generally pretty chill. I'm usually hanging out with friends at a bar or watching movies.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I didn't like Breaking Bad. Deal with it. On the other hand, Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog is one of the best things ever.

You should message me if
If I passed the photo test and you want to see if I have a personality. I do, I promise!

Also if you want to chat, if you'd like to grab a beverage, if you'd be interested in checking out a comedy club, if you'd like to try indoor trampolining (that's not innuendo, it's a real thing), and/or if you have a serious philosophical point to make and you'd like a captive audience.
