I'm a creative writing student who just started a new job. Right
now I'm trying to enjoy the start of summer and to relax as much as
possible. I like bars, restaurants or coffee shops, the only
requirement being good conversation. Politically speaking I'm
liberal, but I like to have my views and beliefs challenged. As I
mentioned above, I like conversation, so why not a bit of debate?
What I’m doing with my life
Trying to figure out my personal philosophy and enjoying the
Republican primary. I may be a democrat, but I love listening to
impassioned counter arguments, especially when they're pointed and
false. Hence my small crush on Michele Bachmann (Sara Palin is
I’m really good at
Writing, listening, and catching a good vibe and letting it take me
as far as it will.
The first things people usually notice about me
That I'm hispanic, or a pacific islander, or native american, or
God knows what. Every day I thank my dad (white) and mom (black)
for my racial ambiguity (actually I'm pretty pissed I can't grow a
beard or shaggy afro).
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Like a lot of people my favorite show is Arrested Development,
though lately I've been getting a kick out of It's Always Sunny in
Philadelphia. I hope it doesn't deduct too many points from my
profile, but I watched every episode of the ill-conceived show 'The
Even', which if nothing else proves I'm persistent, even in the
face of bad sci-fi writing.
I like old school rap, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac and The Roots.
While music is important, my loves and hates are all over the map.
And not in a conceited way, I just can't make up my mind.
I enjoy most types of fiction as long as its well written. My fav's
would be 'Jesus' Sun', 'The Things They Carried' and 'The Sun Also
Rises'. I was lucky enough to be mentored by a writer named Jeff
Talarigo, and thankfully his writing is good enough that I can say
whatever he writes I'll read. Also, I went to school with two
writers, Amye Archer and William Prystauk. They might not be greats
yet, but their names are unique enough that eventually they'll be
known (and are currently googleble (is that something can be
I've recently come across a site called longform.com which is a
great aggregate site of long non-fiction pieces. I just read a
profile on Dan Savage and his view of monogamy, and while I don't
subscribe to it wholeheartedly, I have to say it was
Also, I'm a sucker for a good graphic novel or collected set of
comic books. Batman is my favorite, not because of the movies,
which are great, but because 'The Long Halloween' and 'Dark Rising'
are some of the best mystery writing I've been privileged to
I drive a lot for work, so a good podcast is a must. I enjoy the
playful pretension contained in all slate.com podcasts. Above all,
including my strange love of Pink Floyd, the PRI produced This
American Life is a reason in and of itself to wake up in the
The six things I could never do without
Ipod, a book, pictures of my girls, memories of good times, the
thought of sunshine to come, and the general stirrings I have that
things are going to be good.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
My place in life, both in an existential since, but also my role as
a father. I make sure never to come to a conclusion, because I
think the journey of thought is as exciting as any.
On a typical Friday night I am
Probably doing something low-key because I work on Saturday's,
though a good cider is always a reason to stay up too late.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
That cheesy, club oriented pop-music makes the day seem brighter
and more optimistic. Can't say 'Tik Tok' or 'Party in the USA'
doesn't make me think everything is going to be all good.
You should message me if
If you like to talk and now how to get a point across with out
being patronizing. I'm not closed minded towards people who are
different from me (hell, its almost a turn on), but I can't stand
it when people treat how I was raised as though its stupid or pig
