Seeking - experiences with other dating sites

Apr 5, 2010

A female friend of mine recently said to me, "I signed up for Match.com and I was flooded with hundreds of messages from old men who didn't even read my profile."

My friend wishes to remain anonymous.  Which stinks, because Rudder and I are working on an OkTrends blog post all about why paying for online dating creates an imbalance, and we'd love to quote someone reporting this kind of experience.

So, if (1) you're female, (2) you've used a pay dating site and had an experience like that, (3) you have nice, clear pictures on OkC, and (4) you wouldn't mind us quoting you and showing your photo on the blog, you can post a comment like my friend's below.

My friend's quote is kind of the ideal for the story, so the closer your quote is to it - while remaining true of course - the more likely we'll select it.

Thanks!

An image of LifesZamazing I don't satisfy your criteria, but I just wanted to say I'm looking forward to the next blog.

An image of chriscoyne Thanks! We're excited for this next blog post, too. We still need a volunteer, though.

An image of Regina29 Well I've had all sorts of strange stories happen in the on-line dating world, but I'm sure you are looking for someone much younger to match your demographics since I'm an antique out here! Good luck in your search! Peace, Regina

Well there is an obvious positive correlation between age and income and an equally obvious negative correlation between age and fitness, albeit offset somewhat by the fact that youth ate a lot of ice cream on couches after the end of the cold war. But the really interesting correlate would be intelligence of the users on the various dating sites which probably cannot be comparatively measured since each dating site regards such information as propriatary and/or private. Intuitively however a dating site which requires intelligent answers to tricky questions will draw clever people. Which leads to people like etr who are broke but bright. What can I say I am good at inking tell all stories. What might also be interesting would be to measure education-income-age correlations. We should expect youth to have more formal education - but then what about the gold collar demographic of youth who forsook formal education in pursuit of money? And also do rich people date other rich people? How often do partners incomes converge, how often do they diverge? And finally, what about daytime soap operas? Can soap opera viewing time be used as a proxy for other data-sets? And if so which ones? Inquiring minds want to know!

An image of tarryon I spent six months on Match before letting my subscription lapse and switching over to OkC, and I have many stories to tell about the differences. (Which are already obvious, despite being on OkC for a *very* short time.) I'd be willing to give you a quote and let you use a photo, but I have a proposal. Instead of one short quote - how about a female perspective for your blog? I know the stereotypes about women and math, but I graduated with a degree in psychology and have a soft spot for stats. Plus, now I'm in law school and can't just freely give a quote without trying to negotiate. If you say yes, you are guaranteed a truthful, witty, statistical loving, female perspective on the differences between free and paid dating websites. Please message me if you are even close to maybe. - Tarryon

An image of chriscoyne hey Tarryon - thanks for your offer! Bringing another voice to the blog - especially a female perspective, as you said - is something we've considered, but it won't happen in the next couple months. The big issue is workflow; we want the blog to be pretty heavy in statistics, and therefore the writers need to be here in the office, spending a lot of time with our data. When Christian writes a post, he doesn't simply write it...he spends weeks poking around in our databases, usually with the help of multiple programmers. Practically speaking, and from a security perspective, our blog writers need to be employees here. Eventually we could hire someone and bring them here as a full-time blogger, but it's a decision we're postponing for now. I'll still take that quote :-)

Hi Chris, I don't meet your critieria but just wanted to respond because I love OKC so much. I was not on a paid site but went to E-Harmony about a year ago. I was overwhelmed with 94 responses the first day!!! They don't have anything close to the screening/match process ya'll have and filling out the profile wasn't anywhere near as much fun as here...I found myself actually laughing and having a good time while filling in the OKC questions. I have met some amazing ppl here that I would not have had the opportunity to know otherwise......thanks for expanding my horizons! am
