I am kind, curious, and a thinker.

My Self-Summary

I'd love to tell you about all the little nuances of my personality and preferences, but I think that would take up too much of your time and this space. So I'll stick with the big stuff and if you're still interested or even mildly curious, I'm happy to share more. My name is Tom and I'm a recent migrant to Boulder. I love it here. I am very much into rock climbing but I have other things I enjoy as well. I like salsa dancing, cooking, brewing and drinking beer, playing games (electronic and the old-fashioned physical kind too), deep conversations, playing in the water, and singing to the radio in my car.

What I’m doing with my life

I'm pursuing my 40 hour engineering job at the moment, but when I'm not busy with that, I'm usually traveling around the state / neighboring states looking for good climbing spots. I love to travel, and am finding that traveling with friends is WAY more fun than traveling with family (It's probably obvious to most, but I did a lot of traveling growing up). I'm one of those people with a map and a bunch of pushpins to mark where I still want to go.

I’m really good at

Lots of things. I tend to want to be good at everything, which can be frustrating at times, and very rewarding at others. I'm pretty good at climbing, but I still have a long way to go. I'm taking lessons and getting better at salsa dancing, but I wouldn't say I'm really good yet. I'm really good at card games, unless I'm playing with my family. I'm also really good at being an engineer, which has far-reaching consequences outside of work.

The first things people usually notice about me

I'm quiet, but that's usually because I'm quiet when I first meet someone. Other than that, the fact that I'm honest and I enjoy smiling, which I do a lot.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I used to read a lot of fantasy and sci-fi (and don't even get me started on the whole SyFy thing) but I haven't in a while. Recently I've been reading technical books to try to brush up on some topics I'm interested in outside of work. Movies are another beast altogether. I have an extensive movie collection, and enjoy the times when I can just sit for a couple of hours and watch something entertaining. I really don't like scary movies, but just about anything else goes. My favorites tend to be the ones with conflict and a good story. As for music, any time I'm in the car I have the radio on, but I don't own much music. But I like pretty much anything I know some of the words to. Food should have its own category box. I enjoy cooking and finding new recipes. I like lots and lots of different foods from all over the world, which isn't really specific, but it's true.

The six things I could never do without

(When I read this category, the first thing I thought of was "what do I need if I quit my job right now", so here's my response to that question instead)
1-Climbing gear
2-Mode of transportation (because I'd go climbing all over the place)
3-Camp stove
4-Laptop (because I'd go a little crazy without technology)
5-Swimming trunks
6-A towel, because they're about the most useful thing one can have (bonus points if you got that very obscure reference)

I spend a lot of time thinking about

um, how to fill this box without seeming insane. Seriously, my thoughts are as rampant and numerous as rabbits in mating season.

On a typical Friday night I am

Either in the car going somewhere to climb for the weekend, or hanging out with friends.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I'm going to be really, really good at something someday. I just don't know what it is.

You should message me if

You can breathe.

Seriously though, I think trying to describe yourself is difficult at best, and people tend to paint a different picture than the reality. If you're smart and adventurous and if you're curious about a climbing, dancing, cooking thinker, you should probably send me a message.
