My self-summary
The great Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh said, "For things to reveal themselves to us, we need to be ready to abandon our views about them." I think that's a pretty good philosophy.

I'm a man who doesn't fit into categories and that is due to my strong independent streak. I'm a college professor who conducts research in experimental aesthetics. Since I never had children, I guess my students are my children by proxy. I work hard, but I need a lot of down time. I think people would say I'm loyal and kind.

Music is important to me. I see a lot of shows every year. I listen to everything from punk/metal to jazz to electronica to classic rock. Last year some of the bands I saw were Jane's Addiction, Meat Puppets, Eilen Jewell, Z.Z Top, and Mastodon.

The world is a treasure and it would be nice to share some of those experiences with someone. At my "seasoned" age, I've become more circumspect and flexible about relationships. I think you need to go with the flow. If you focus on the present and the joy you extract from the moment, everything else will take care of itself. That makes sense to me.
What I’m doing with my life
I ditched my large black motorcycle for a mountain bike which I never seem to ride. I have a strong interest in photography. I am now a senior faculty member at my institution and as a result have taken on leadership roles as warranted.
I’m really good at
Teaching and listening. Taking charge when someone needs to step up and do what needs done. Perfecting the art of aging hipsterdom. ;-)
The first things people usually notice about me
My body art. Mayor Fetterman of Braddock is one of my people.

Some of my music faves are PJ Harvey, Nick Cave, Sonic Youth, Sabbath, Social Distortion, The Specials, Bob Marley, John Coltrane, Massive Attack, King Tubby, The Clash, Underworld, Ladytron, Courtney Barnett.

Some of my favorite reads are Steppenwolf, Confederacy of Dunces, Fahrenheit 451, The Drowned World, too many others to list.

The six things I could never do without
1. The love of my close friends and family.
2. Access to lots of music.
3. Perspective.
4. My independent streak.
5. My camera.
6. My black leather jacket and my Doc Martens.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Buddhist ideas about life and death.

Wondering about how much wood a woodchuck could chuck if...
On a typical Friday night I am
Reading, processing photographs, getting upset about politics (I'm a progressive), hanging with friends doing something low-key.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
My empathy for others runs deep. I'm an open book. Ask me anything and I'll give you a polite, straight up, honest answer.
You should message me if
... at this moment you can't stop thinking about a pink elephant.
