Likes: books, listening to npr, arguing (oops, discussing) foreign
policy and politics in general, traveling - have been to at least
as many countries as the number of years I've lived (and hope to
keep that up :-) I also like using my camera and once i get
started, i can take thousands of pictures a day. I like the
outdoors, walking through cities, taking random turns and corners,
hiking through deserts and mountains or just strolling along any
body of water. When not working, traveling, or experimenting with
my photos, I enjoy being outside, being a devil's advocate, trying
new (or old favorite) restaurants, going to museums, watching
theater, movies, and sitting down to read a book (often many
books), volunteering and teaching kids in my free time.
I am abstractly practical, adventurous, and inquisitive
What I’m doing with my life
usually working, traveling, or pursuing one of my hobbies - often
all at the same time.
I’m really good at
packing, traveling, cooking
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I have a hard time choosing favorites. I love bookstores and I'll
try to read any book I can get my hands on. I often read a mixture
of fiction and non-fiction books. I had a "Books on democracy"
phase. I have a permanent foreign policy books phase. My guilty
pleasure is John Grisham. I recently read predictably irrational
and really enjoyed it.
I tend to like movies that make me think or are too hilarious to
make me think about thinking...doesn't have to be a specific
genre/director, although I am a big fan of Almodovar and Miyazaki.
Some movies I've enjoyed in the recent years include Inglorious
Basterds, Up, Helvetica, Volver, Cache, Eternal sunshine of the
spotless mind, kung fu hustle, habla con ella, memento, city of
god, and several miyazaki ones.
Try to stay away from country and rap but other than that, my music
taste vary a bit, depending on my mood.. Rock, pop, jazz ,
classical, alternative, indie. I listen to all things from Belle
& Sebastian, Camera Obscura, Joanna Newson to Sufjan Stevens,
Arcade Fire to Green Day, Dido, Corrs to U2, Coldplay
Food is good! I tend to like asian foods more than other
types...korean, chinese, indonesian, thai, afghani, indian,
pakistani, persian, malaysian, italian, spanish, turkish,
ethiopian, burmese. Unfortunately Chicago doesn't have a burmese
place so I have to go to san francisco to get my fix. I'm up for
trying anything a few times until i'm really convinced that i don't
like it. Unfortunately, german/austrian foods fall into that
The six things I could never do without
my passports (all of them), internets (yes, all of them), camera,
teleportation (as long as it mostly puts me back together ),
mangoes (only the good kind), npr (not the late night cbc broadcast
in chicago) , thoughts, airplanes (don't love them but can't
imagine living without them) , the outdoors (green things, large
bodies of water, mountains)
I spend a lot of time thinking about
how to take over the world and be a benevolent dictator :)
how to magically improve education
You should message me if
if you enjoy sarcastic, political, philosophically silly
conversations all at the same time.
