I am independent, creative, and witty.
My Self-Summary
Where to even start --- I've grown up in
NC and spent most of my life here. I attended
Cornell University for 2.5 years studying philosophy but due to my
father's poor health I returned home to help my mother care for
him. I've since enrolled at UNCC to finish my degree.
The boring basic info -- I'm 6', brown hair (as the photos all
show), I've been told that I have hazel eyes and that they change
color frequently; sometimes a light blue, other times gray, and
even green sometimes. Interesting fact #1 -- I don't really know
what color my eyes are, I'm
colorblind! Honestly.
I enjoy writing, be it attempts at
poetry,
short stories or even pieces for
the school or local newspaper. I've written for the high school and
college paper, had a couple pieces printed in local papers, and to
date have had one poem win a national (albeit youth category)
award.
I also
wrestleed
competitively in high school and college, going to states and
nationals. I've since slowed down on this a bit but I love the
sport still and teaching my oldest nephew some of the tricks/moves
I've picked up along the way.
Second interesting fact, I'm a professional gamer. I began playing
World of
Warcraft almost five years ago and got into competitive player
vs. player tournaments. Its been an amazing ride so far and I look
forward to seeing where it takes me. This "job" (if you want to
call it that) has paid for my college, car, and given me a healthy
bank account as a college student. Its also allowed me to travel
the US and other countries (China, Japan, South Korea, and all over
Europe). I keep it all in check though, originally it started out
as a gimmick and a fun way to make some extra money but over the
past three years its really taken off. Regardless, I enjoy it and
if someone wants to pay us (the team I'm on) to play a video game
-- in this economy, I'm game.
I try to keep an even head about it but if companies want to
sponsor us and pay us money to play a video game, I'm all for it,
I'll do my best to take advantage of it and enjoy it while the
opportunity is out there.
What I’m doing with my life
I'm entering into my Senior year at
UNCC, studying
philosophy (focus is on
ethics) and
religion especially the
intersection of ethics, religion, and society/culture). I believe
in something bigger than me but I'm not sure yet what it is -- it
could be an actual God, or perhaps humanity as a whole (guess that
would make me a humanist on some level). At best, I'm more in
agreement with a deist approach to God (see
Thomas Jefferson and
Harold
Kushner).
I spend a lot of time with my family, I love my sisters deeply and
my parents. My father is in very poor health and in the past we've
had an estranged relationship so we do what we can to try and fix
that. I've also got a house full of pets -- 3 dogs, 3 cats, and a
pet snake. There's also a family of hawks that live in our backyard
that we feed every morning, so perhaps they're pets too.
I volunteer as an English conversation tutor through the college to
international students.
I'm also a member of UNCC's
Ethics Bowl -- think debate team but
focused on arguing over ethical scenarios that the judges place us
in.
Through professors I stay in touch with at Cornell, UNCC, and some
of my father's friends (he's a former professor) I've gotten in
touch with a couple graduate schools in Europe that I'm very
interested in. I'm primarily interested in pursuing a program in
ethics and social theory, but there's enough of an interest there
in international policy and economics that I can't rule those two
routes out either. I still have another year to go but in reality,
another four to six months before I have to begin sending out
applications. We'll see where it all takes me.
I’m really good at
Thinking outside the box, creative writing, working with
technology, making kids laugh ... christ, I don't know.
The first things people usually notice about me
My whole beard situation changes from month to month. I enjoy
having at least some stubble, but sometimes I'm just in the mood to
grow out a beard.
I'm also a big guy -- 6', during off season from wrestling I
maintain around 190-210.
I'm also usually telling jokes, I enjoy laughing and hearing others
laugh too. Frequently however, some of those jokes may be
considered "inappropriate" in public.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
I've run across very few books that I couldn't stand but odds are
if Espinoza or Kant wrote it, I'd rather pass.
I really enjoyed reading
Midnight
in the Garden of Good and Evil.
Like most guys, I enjoy the occasional action flick. I also enjoy
watching the
Discovery Channel, watching
documentaries, international movies (
Amélie anyone?), and yes .. I've
watched my fair share of "chick flicks" and enjoyed them.
Music -- I was raised on
country and
oldies but I also enjoy modern
rock/alternative. I've recently stumbled across
Kamelot and
Rhapsody of Fire and am very
pleased with both of their sounds.
The six things I could never do without
I live a pretty non materialistic life and I like it, it works for
me.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
The future, myself, animals, graduate school, etc.
On a typical Friday night I am
Hanging out with my roommates, friends, etc. Occasional trip to the
bar, music venues, movies. Pretty much anything that most college
aged kids do -- minus the club scene, not my style.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit here
I have full colorblindness. Remember those black and white movies
from the 60's and earlier? Yea, that's life through my eyes.
I took time off from undergrad to care for my father. He has
Alzheimer's and it's getting progressively worse, faster than the
doctors anticipated. His condition is depressing but I would of
made the same decision over again to withdraw from Cornell and walk
away from my scholarships to be at his side.
You should message me if
want to know more, you're interested, looking to make friends, etc
