I am bearded, curious, and hungry.

My Self-Summary

I like to learn new things and go new places. I have a tendency to acquire new interests and obsess over them. Right now that is camping and fixing an old bike.

To quote Calvin (of the wonderful Calvin and Hobbes): "It's a magical world, Hobbes ol' buddy... let's go exploring!"

I couldn't agree more.

What I’m doing with my life

Right now I write code for websites, on a steady but still technically freelance basis (by choice). Otherwise I play drums in a not-too-serious prog/post rock band, ride bikes, drink nice beer, and cook dishes just a bit above my technical proficiency level. I've taken photos on and off since high school, so sometimes I'm shooting or trying to figure out what exactly all the sliders in Lightroom do.

What else is going on with me: looking into grad school, learning how to brew beer, teaching myself how to solder and assemble electronics. I'm always juggling about three hobbies more than I have time for.

I’m really good at

Computers (for better or worse). Looking at the bright side of things. Solving problems logically. Listening. Eating ice cream or other deserts as long as they aren't too sweet. Being agreeable. Just barely catching Metra trains. Being willing to help out.

I'm not good at sitting still, multitasking, or making lists.

The first things people usually notice about me

I have a beard and thick plastic rimmed glasses. I'm shy and quiet. I have a septum piercing but a lot of people don't notice it. I'm too lazy to unroll my pant leg when I ride a bike somewhere, so a lot of the time one of them is rolled up.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Food: I try to follow the basic rules outlined in Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food: Eat Food, Not Too Much, Mostly Plants. I like to cook, and preparing new dishes is my idea of a good time. I am recovering from a serious case of weekly cupcake making. Going to eat at new restaurants, especially in new places, is fun.

Books: I don't read as much as I used to (but this is changing). I read nonfiction and the occasional novel. Books I either just finished or am in the process of reading: The God Delusion (Richard Dawkins), On Food and Cooking: The Science and Lore of the Kitchen (Harold McGee), The Future of the Internet - And How To Stop It (Jonathan Zittrain), The Road (Cormac McCarthy). I like to read graphic novels and comic books, but not too seriously.

Movies: My favorite movies of the last few years are The Dark Night, Wall-E, Let The Right One In (Swedish original version), Sunshine, Children of Men. I also enjoy documentaries and foreign films.

Music: I listen to a lot of instrumental and progressive rock. Bands I've been into the most recently are The Faceless, Animals as Leaders, Scale the Summit, Cynic, God is an Astronaut, and Opeth. My favorite song writers are Tom Waits and Ani DiFranco. I also listen to a smattering of modern jazz (Avishai Cohen) and classical (Philip Glass).

The six things I could never do without

Glasses, music, a bicycle (or public transit), open windows when it's nice out, science, traveling.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

What to do next. I get nervous when I don't feel like I'm moving forward with whatever I'm doing.

On a typical Friday night I am

Meeting some friends for a movie or food or drinks, going to a show, leaving for a weekend camping trip, or watching a movie.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

It's hard for me to talk to people when I think we don't have anything in common. I suck at small talk.

I don't like talking on the phone for long periods of time.

You should message me if

You are kind, willing to try new things, and interested in going on adventures.
