My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Loyal Canadian subject of Her Majesty, thus bringing shame and dishonour to both my Irish and French ancestors, who must be looking down on me disapprovingly. (For the uninitiated, British-style self-deprecation is a favourite of mine, along with sarcasm as well as deadpan and absurd humour. Unfortunately a lot of these genres don't translate well into the written form!)

I'm a computer science student, and my studies are big part of my life. I find programming and the topics surrounding it quite interesting, but it's okay if you don't share that passion. I'm also interested in computer games, and the science around them, as yes, there is actually a field of study dedicated to them, and it's not silly business.

I'm also a fan of the film production process, and like talking about movies in terms of editing, lighting, effects work, acting, directing... the stuff you find on the DVD extras or documentaries. I'm no expert on it, so if you are, I'm happy to learn more!

I prefer culture to nature (i.e. looking at pretty architecture rather than pretty trees, although I am certainly not averse to beautiful landscapes), and I practice mostly solitary sports like skiing, swimming, and hiking (if you call that a sport. It's at least exercise).
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Studying Computer Science at the University of Southern California; pursuing jobs in the tech and gaming industries; musician (guitar, bass, mostly. I dabble in electronic genres with Ableton and Fruity Loops.)

Going to be moving to L.A. in August!
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
coding, guitar, history (if invited to I can ramble for a very long time on some historical/political subject), sarcasm, humour, proper English spelling (see "humour"), board games, like the classic Catan or, God help you, Diplomacy, among others.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
They used to notice my long hair, but it is now a hell of a lot shorter. Currently, it's probably that I have a lot of interests and knowledge that extend beyond STEM fields, which always seems to surprise people for some reason.

movies, to list a few off the top of my head:
The Thing
Moonraker (Bond in space... need I say more?)
Die Hard
The Big Lebowski
Star Wars IV-VI (God no, not the prequels, please! I'm also quite apathetic about the release of the seventh instalment of the series.)

Seriously though, A New Hope and Empire, make great films for discussion from a film-making point of view. I'm more of a film geek than a sci-fi geek.

I don't really watch television shows, but there are a few I watch:
Game of Thrones
Half in the Bag (it's a web show)

A lot of non-fiction, mostly historical or analysis. Sometimes academic papers but they are not for a light reading mood. A few examples would be Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs and Steel, or Roger Crowley's City of Fortune.

Various metal genres, classical, glitch-hop & electronic families, the rock and jazz families... I'm not a know-it-all when it comes to music, but I find bands I like, some popular, some more obscure.

Favourite artists include Savant, Claude Debussy, Satan, Yes ... I also have a soft spot for funky / disco genres, but I won't claim to have an in-depth knowledge of all the bands.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
2 or more monitors. I can't be productive on just one monitor anymore! I currently have 3 monitors for my desktop, so let's call this 3 items.

Next up: a lack of Internet connection would definitely be a problem, so I nominate my modem.

A roof to live under would help, and I'd like to be dressed but I only have one item left... so I guess a onesie will do. Or a kilt. Maybe a chiton, a toga or a kimono. It really would depend on where the space-time wormhole that only allows me to take 6 things with me would lead to.

Because people tend to put Netflix up on this list a lot, I would just like to let the world know that I am one of the filthy heretics who do not use Netflix. I hope to one day repent and pay the tithes to receive its Holy Communion.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
the planning required for moving to another country as a student!
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
certainly not studying! Fridays night is, at worst, my one break night, unless it's a really busy week (looking at you, midterms!)
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Well, I tend to use the same username for lots of accounts... I'm sure you can dig up something if you're curious (and creepy) enough!
You should message me if
Offer a few tips to help matches win you over.
you feel like messaging me? Worst case, I don't write back, and fortunately for you, you won't even see my judging look of disapproval and/or confusion! And that's a real shame because I have a really expressive look of confusion.

Discussion topics? Do want to discuss what's so bad/good about the new Hobbit trilogy and why? Sure! Want to talk about Idris Elba's potential (or lack thereof) as the next Bond? Go ahead! I like debating about most things, as long as I have knowledge about the topic or time to read up on it.

But don't worry about topics; if there's some common ground, we should find it soon enough!
