My self-summary Propose an edit
I'll toss out the most important thing here first: I'm married, and
happily so. I'm not here to play games, I'm not looking for some
on-the-sly "strange" and I'm not looking for a way out of the
marriage. I signed on here to take the tests and learn a little bit
about myself. Stop snickering, I'm being honest.
That said...my wife is on OKCupid as well. She's currently a 38%
match and 23% "enemy" (!). And she is constantly getting messages
from guys here wanting to look past the married part...while I get
the occasional profile view, only to have the lady run for the
hills when she sees the word "married." But that's OK; the only
type of intercourse I am seeking here is of the verbal type.
Don't get discouraged or turned off by my marital status, however;
I'd love to talk and discuss stuff that interests you anyway. I
have a lot of interests and can even try and help you explain why
men are the way they are. And -- unlike some of the other guys you
might find here, I'm not going to ask you to hook up soon...or join
me for a webcam chat...or anything like that.
I have a daughter and she is truly her Daddy's little girl. I enjoy
talking about kids and sports, philosophy and politics (as long as
the discussion stays civil), life and goals. I've discovered that I
enjoy speaking to people who have some life experience, so I'm
ususally comforted by those who are older than I am (yes, even if
you're in your 40s or 50s or whatever; I find experience a real
turn-on).
When I was a teenager, I was very idealistic about what I wanted to
be and what I'd eventually become. In my twenties, I was looking to
impress people with what I could do, yet became a little cynical
about the idealistic stuff I was so certain I could accomplish. Now
I'm in my thirties and am comfortable with who I am but am still
working towards my goals on my own terms. As a forward-thinking
person, I'm actually looking ahead to the next step in that
evolution.
What I'm doing with my life Propose an edit
Pretty normal stuff...the wife, a house in the suburbs, a 9-year
old daughter (who I absolutely adore and probably spoil too much)
and the requisite golden retreiver. But there's much more to me
than labels, and I've fought the constraints of conformity my
entire adult life.
I have had the same job for almost 10 years. I'm a technical guy
who's working towards management. Reading that again, it seems that
I just blew my "fight against conformity" out of the water but my
style of management is more free-wheeling than simply wearing a tie
and telling others to get to it. I'm one of those guys who'll get
in the trenches too.
I'm a college graduate (bachelor of science in communication from
the State U. of New York). I used to do a lot of things
(lifeguarding, the Army, retail store manager, freelance writer,
worked at Woodstock '94...I even lasted 3 weeks at AOL trying to
talk customers out of quitting!) but the most interesting of my
past jobs was as a radio DJ. While that part of my life is finished
(you have no idea how low-paying that job can be), I still have an
interest in doing a radio show online -- on my own terms -- if I
ever get off my duff and get it together. I am also a part-time
writer with some
published works to my credit...nothing earth-shaking, yet it's
still cool to hold something in my hands and say I made it.
I'm really good at Propose an edit
I'm really good at listening and communicating. I'm also good at
fixing things. Since some of the stuff I've written has been
published, I suppose I can claim to be a little bit good at that
too.
On...and don't worry that you'll tell me something only to see it
written into one of my stories later. I am very good at keeping
secrets, too.
The first thing(s) people usually notice about me Propose an edit
My gregarious personality. That, or my sense of humor...I like to
make people laugh.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food Propose an edit
Books: I'm a huge history buff, so most of the books I read have
something to do with history. I've been known to read Dave Barry
books to my daughter and wish I could write more like Lewis
Grizzard did. I'm also known to read stuff on musical genres as
well.
Movies: I like comedies, and that includes some romantic comedies
as well. I love to laugh. From silly stuff (Airplane, Naked Gun,
Super Troopers, and Kentucky Fried Movie) to Mel Brooks stuff
(Blazing Saddles, History of the World Part 1) to borderline sappy
stuff (When Harry Met Sally), I can watch all of those a bunch of
times and never get tired of them.
Since we're on the subject of films, I grew up on Star Wars. The
Godfather (Parts 1 and 2) and Goodfellas are among the "can't watch
'em too many times" list as well. I used to watch a lot of war
films before I joined the Army and experienced one myself...nothing
bad, I just don't enjoy them like I once did.
I also think The Last American Virgin was an overlooked
masterpiece. Haven't seen it in years but it was great.
Music: As an ex-DJ, I have a pretty wide variety of musical tastes.
Among the formats I did: Alternative, All-70s, Country, Rock and
Dance. But I am something of a 70s music junkie. Seriously, not
just the stuff you hear on the AOR stations but almost anything
that was a hit then. I've designed a website about the radio hits
of the 1970s (ask me for the URL). I also like country (especially
the pre-1990s output), 80s music (grew up with it) and basically
whatever else suits me...Come to think of it, there's not a lot
that I don't like outside of rap (though I love early hip-hop and
funk). I'm also a sucker for beautiful female vocals and don't care
if somebody questions my sexual orientation when they see Barbra
Streisand in my CD collection.
Speaking of music...I have noticed how my tastes have matured
through the years. As a teen, I loved Meat Loaf's "Paradise By the
Dashboard Light" but couldn't get into Bob Seger's "Night Moves."
What I didn't realize then was that both songs told a similar story
from two different viewpoints. Both were about horny teens getting
it on in the car. "Paradise" was much more direct (at 17, I
understood that pretty quickly) and a lot more humorous. "Night
Moves" was told from the perspective of a guy in his 30s who was
thinking back to that moment an realizing it was half a lifetime
ago. It took me several years to pick up on and appreciate that.
That's something I love about music.
Food: I am really into Italian. As a native New Yorker, I love
pizza when it's made right (and pizza as we know it is American,
not really Italian). I also like Mexican and a nice steak every now
and then. But I'm just as happy with a good burger, a hot dog from
a street vendor or casual dining when it involves a great
conversation.
The six things I could never do without Propose an edit
Putting aside essential things like food, water and shelter...in no
particular order: love, laughter, a little variety, something to
read, my laptop and my daughter.
I spend a lot of time thinking about Propose an edit
Life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness. I have been known to
ruminate on life experiences, philosophical stuff that isn't all
that deep (otherwise, it's boring) and can be dragged into
opinionated discussions on politics (I am a libertarian but can see
liberal and conservative points of view easily), sports and the
like without becoming judgemental or overbearing. For a good idea
of what kind of stuff I think about, read my journal entries. And
I'm always looking for the next great article I can write.
On a typical Friday night I am Propose an edit
Home. I work on Saturday so I'm in bed a lot earlier than I was
back in my college days. It sounds sad, but I do enjoy getting
those paychecks...and there's something I don't fight when it comes
to conformity.
The most private thing I'm willing to admit here Propose an edit
I'm a guy who likes to collect pictures of other men in athletic
poses. In a way, that sounds like I might be a little less than
straight...but no, I have a collection of baseball cards. I started
the hobby when I was 5 years old and never really stopped. That
said...I'm not one of those guys who lets his hobby overwhelm him.
I don't throw stupid amounts of money away to add to my collection
(though my wife might disagree with that sometimes) and won't even
bother looking to work on the hobby unless all my other
responsibilities (bills, etc.) have been taken care of. Lately,
I've been involved in the hobby in a different way...some of the
stuff I've had published was in hobby magazines.
You should message me if Propose an edit
You want to talk about life and stuff...or if you just want a
"guy's" opinion on something. I have no real ulterior motive here
other than to take tests, learn more about myself and get to know
some people that I wouldn't bump into otherwise.
