My self-summary
Casting about for a username, I googled username generator. The site I found was good at coming up with color+animal combos, but I felt their animal selection was a bit limited so I decided to kick it up a notch. Ta-da. Thoughts?

So this is supposed to be the summary section... I love to travel (yes, I know, who doesn't?) I'm intellectually curious and enjoy people who enjoy discovering, figuring stuff out, or even pondering. I like to parse words. I see having a positive impact as a good aspiration.

I dislike the term bucket list, for some reason, but like the idea of such a list itself. What do you dream of doing? What have you done from your past wish list? How'd it go? I loved living abroad for a while. Loved the magic of breathing underwater among amazing creatures. So far in the few minutes spent updating this, I can't think of a dream that I regret doing. Cue Twain quote.

I'd love to meet someone to enjoy learning about, and with, and spend a lot of time laughing along the way. Or at least wryly smirking and rolling eyes. Someone with compatible imperfections and tolerances, who is up for following a whim or coming up with a plan by turns. Someone who is excited about me in particular, and vice versa, would be awesome. In other words, it'd be great to meet the love of my life and all that, and I'd be ready for it if it happened, but I'm not holding my breath, or my life up, in the meantime, nor do I expect each new person to fit into some preconceived mold. Let's just meet some cool new friends so we all broaden our social horizons and have fun in the process.
What I’m doing with my life
I work for an academic non-profit with a really cool group of people; very often I work on writing proposals. I read a fair bit of nonfiction, it is often poplit about cognition, happiness, food systems, and like to balance them out with brain candy novels (sometimes "literature" even) too. I like to go to farmer's markets, and prefer to get as many of my groceries there as I can, but am not overly strict about it. Fairly often, I enjoy a Sunday eve spent cooking. I love cooking with people, or for appreciative people, or even for myself. I wanted to go back to running, but after an injury several years ago it was not the same, so I'm exploring other activities and getting back to the gym. I miss sailing with a crew, and need to travel more again. Enjoying putting down some roots for once though. Pondering what casual class I should take next to entertain myself... Maybe something artistic? culinary? professional?
I’m really good at
Being honest and direct. It's also empowered me to put my foot in my mouth from time to time, but I think I've learned to balance it with sensitivity most of the time. A couple of my friends noted in this week that I am "a good sounding board" or person to talk through life's quandaries with. Also a good travel buddy.
The first things people usually notice about me
If I have my hair down, people tend to remark on it, particularly those who've only seen me with it up.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I am bored with listing favorites, so easy to get trite and old. Suffice it to say I love foods of almost all kinds, and can appreciate anything from foodie heaven to roadside greasy spoon.

I like movies and sometimes shows if they are recorded so I can catch up at my leisure. I also lived without TV for a few years and enjoyed that just as much. Do not like reality TV as a general rule, except the Sing Off. Enjoy occasional TED talks- who doesn't? Recent movies seen... Beasts of the Southern Wild was really interesting. The Intouchables and Brave, on a recent flight. Lincoln. A rescreening of Bad Santa.

Love books; read regularly. Sometimes nonfiction, sometimes lit, sometimes formulaic mystery or other beach reading, sometimes cereal boxes if there is nothing else. ;) I also enjoy editing. Recently read a novel titled Flight Behavior.

Need a new book to read: suggestions?

I like music, most kinds, especially with good vocals, and love to dance once I get in the mood, but I think I define myself less on what I listen to than most people.
The six things I could never do without
Most things can be done without, but here are some things (listing people just seems silly, but of course it should go without saying that friends and family are important.)

I dislike being without:

Coffee... not for the caffeine, I just love it
Something to read, books, the internet
Hot water for bathing... I have lived without, and it is nice to have had the experience, but when available it is a wonderful commodity
Not that I eat them all the time, but when unavailable I find I miss good sandwiches. I wonder if they may be the elusive non-fast-food-chain "American food"...
I like to have living things around, such as plants or pets
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Entrenched ideas: How does one actually change one's mind, or anyone else's? The answer seems even more elusive than how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop.
On a typical Friday night I am
I'm open to anything, but I tend to like a relaxed meal and good conversation with friends.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I'm a sucker for starving baby creatures which has landed me with two cats. I'm good with just two though, someone else will have to adopt the next one.
