I am innovative, restless, and quirky.
My Self-Summary
I'm an open-minded Christian who loves creativity and adores
those who don't fit in the cultural box. I'm a big fan of visible
indications of an
artsy,
creative personality -- for example, I
love
piercings,
alternative styles such as those influenced by
goth, and
punk, and eclecticism.
I'm an odd balance between introvert and
extravert, and I'm really fascinated by people, so I tend
to engage in amateur
sociology. It also makes me fascinated
by critiquing other people's profiles.
I see potential vividly, sometimes so vividly that
it makes it hard to focus on the here and now. In Myers-Briggs
terms I'm an
INFP
with strong N and P -- that pretty much says it all. If you don't
speak Meyers-Briggs, I'm an open-minded big picture thinker who's
always concerned with what something means in the broader
context.
I'm looking for like-minded friends first and
foremost on here. Am I open to falling in love with some
super-awesome woman I meet on here? Absolutely! But anything
romantic would be based on friendship first, and having friends is
always good anyway.
Geography's not a big deal for me in getting to
know people on here, because I'm open to making OKC friends
anywhere in the world, regardless of gender or status. That said,
I'd also love to meet people I could actually
do things with
around Memphis at the moment. I'd gladly relocate (within
reason) if true love developed. I do have a marked preference for
cities and urban
life, but that's highly negotiable.
What I’m doing with my life
I have lots of ambitions. The one I will soon be pursuing is to
become a career adviser on a college campus. To that end, I
plan to enter a graduate program in higher education in 2010. For
now I'm just paying the bills as I wait to get started.
I also have a casual interest in the sociology of culture, of
observing how groups of people interact with each other. At
present I have no concrete plans for study of sociology, but it's
crossed my mind, perhaps in conjunction with my higher ed
studies.
I'm highly motivated to use my abilities to help people -- the
trick is finding the right way to get there.
I’m really good at
- learning languages - Spanish, Portuguese, a little
German, and bits and pieces of half a dozen more
- poker - I love the balance of probability and
psychology
- empathetic listening - Many friends sense that I can be
trusted to listen without judging. This came in handy when I used
to do a street outreach for homeless and alienated youth in metro
Boston.
The first things people usually notice about me
I really don't know. My height. My sense of humor, if they've known
me for a while. People seem to pick up that I'm intelligent, even
though I consider it a gift from God and really don't try to flaunt
it.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
All over the map.
punk rock,
goth rock,
indie rock,
world music (esp.
Brazilian and
Latin) dabbling in other genres I'd
like to know more about like metal, blues, jazz, classical, on and
on.
Bands:
Bauhaus.
Sisters of
Mercy.
Joy
Division.
The
Clash.
Pixies.
X. Millions more.
Movies: I need to see more movies. I keep wishing I knew more about
small independent films, but I don't. I like foreign stuff, too,
but don't consider myself knowledgeable. I like
Almodóvar. I liked
Fight Club. Recently I
saw
Sunshine
Cleaning, which was really good.
Books: Non-fiction:
A New Kind of Christian
by
Brian
McLaren.
The New Christians by
Tony Jones. Not
all religious/ecclesiology stuff. Lots of poker books. Other stuff
not coming to mind right now.
I tend to end up reading more non-fiction but I'd like to balance
it out a bit, just haven't done so. I've enjoyed reading
Chuck Palahniuk,
Nick Hornby,
Douglas
Coupland, and
Yann Martel.
The six things I could never do without
God, creativity, non-conformist people, access to other cultures,
my family, and a road atlas.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
The big picture. Always the big picture.
Career stuff: How would it feel to be in a job that didn't become
boring after 6 months? Should I be an entrepreneur? Where can I
find the "big idea" to support me in entrepreneurship?
Armchair sociology.

Lines of fun and work have blurred a bit over the past few months
as I'm following another dream of playing poker full-time. If I
weren't doing it for work, I'd be doing it for fun.
I like to go out and, specifically in Memphis, want to go to more
shows at the
Hi-Tone, to more
theater kind of stuff, to art
openings, to films at Studio on the Square, to
roller derby. All of these are
things that I enjoy enough to do them myself, but they're much more
fun to do socially.
If I can find local friends who share these interests, OKCupid will
have proved its usefulness.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit here
I'm
INFP. That's a
Myers-Briggs type, which means it's how a particular personality
test classifies me.
We tend to be passionate, emotional people who want greatly to be
liked by others. So the most private thing I'm willing to admit is,
no, I don't always exude the self-confidence necessary to present
myself as maximally attractive. But I'm working on it.
You should message me if
You're a creative person, or even if you're just in search of a
supportive friend.
