My self-summary Propose an edit

I'm in the process of revising what's important to me, so my self-summary will have to change too. You can see the old profile in my journal here, to see where I was before.

ANYWAY...

I've decided to follow my intuition as a full-time pursuit: I will write about what catches my eye, and relate what I see with what I know and what I can imagine. I've been doing this all my life, and it's taken until now to figure out that this is really who I am. It's not necessary to fit that into a conveniently-labeled career. I'm going to up and do it.

The plan is to go to where the people and the stories are, supporting myself through my design work. I am going to publish these experiences and create fun products that appeal to people who are drawn to the same ideals of independence and positive self-empowerment. What makes this more than a crazy dream is that I am already starting to do it through my public writing and design work, and it's just a matter (I think) of committing fully to it and working out the numbers.

In the age of the Internet, it's very possible to do this once you have something to show the world. I've got my marbles lined up, and I'm ready to start transitioning from what I'm doing now to what I want to do. I'd like to meet a woman who feels the same way, who is self-sufficient with a generous heart. Mind you, I'm not talking about being alone together. Our plan will be to find our tribe of like-minded souls, as to create something quietly awesome.

What I'm doing with my life Propose an edit

What I do now: I'm a self-employed designer and consultant, specializing in information graphics and personal branding. I work only with clients who believe in their own product, who find me through my writing on my blog.

What I will do: I collect the true stories and experiences of people, and make connections between them and my own experiences. I am developing personal productivity products based on my writing and design work, to create more passive income and fund more future travel.

I'm really good at Propose an edit

...listening to my intuition
...being objective
...finding non-obvious connections
...developing theories based on personal experience
...describing what I'm tasting
...making up better rules
...being enthusiastic
...playing with digital media
...keeping my computers running lean and mean
...designing elaborate surprise packages
...making sure things are not crooked.
...explaining things from multiple perspectives
...concocting ways to defy Occam's Razor
...integrating thinking and feeling into decision making

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me Propose an edit

That I'm really passionate about what people are doing with their lives, and that I have plenty to say on the subject of engineering our futures to create our own reality.

That I am able to convey both emotional and rational sides of an issue without skipping a beat.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food Propose an edit

Books: PopCo, The Diamond Age, Pattern Recognition, Surely You're Joking Mr Feynmann, The Man Who Ate Everything, Alton Brown's Kitchen Gear, Ender's Game / Ender's Shadow, The Alchemist, The Little Prince, The Sword in the Stone, The Salmon of Doubt, Watership Down, Harry Potter, The Creative Habit, The Freedom Manifesto, Harry Potter, The War of Art (no, that's not a typo), The Alvin Maker Series.

Movies/TV: Ratatouille, Amelie, MI-5, GITS:SAC, Homicide Life on the Street (Season 1-2), Firefly, New Battlestar Galactica, Spirited Away (and any Studio Ghibli film), The Shield, The Incredibles, House, Bones, Farscape, Big Trouble in Little China, the Coen Brothers stuff I've seen, Kamikaze Girls, Bugs Bunny, Groundhog Day, Snatch, The Princess Bride, Fight Club, Parker Lewis Can't Lose, School of Rock, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Kevin Smith stuff, History Channel, Iron Chef, Alton Brown, What Not to Wear, Charlie Rose, Family Guy. I also enjoy heist/cat burgler movies, and movies about High School (I went to an international high school and wonder what I missed).

Radio: NPR (This American Life, Car Talk, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me)

Music: I collect musical instruments that I can't play, and secretly wish I could compose music. I have a fondness for the 80s music of my youth, singer/songwriters (Jason Mraz, Sheryl Crow types), heartbreaking female vocalists (Eva Cassidy, Lisa Hannigan), and at times underground dance electronica.

Foods: I love good Chinese, Indian, Thai, Korean, Japanese, BBQ, Vietnamese, Steak, Any Form of Breakfast, Gourmet Coffee, Artisan Chocolates and Cheeses (mmm). Always willing to sample anything labeled "world-famous", "award-winning", or "authentic" (unless it's made of organs...ugh).

My favorite things: My 49cc retro-style scooter. My sturdy 8" Wustoff Chef's Knife. My VX Nano Laser Mouse. My Lamy fountain pens and Noodler's Brown ink. My Nuvi GPS. Cheap sunglasses that fit my enormous head. The shutter noise a digital SLR. The heated seats of my Volkswagen GTI. The design of my MSR Denali Snowshoes. My Zojirushi Electric Hot Water Bottle. My heavy-duty school-grade electric pencil sharpener. My Model M clicky keyboards. Paper. I like almost anything with an exceptional balance of style, utility, and function.
