My self-summary Propose an edit
I'm someone who loves to learn and hopes to be in a school-type
environment for the rest of my life (hello, professordom). I prefer
one-on-one conversations to big groups, and thus I prefer lounges
to loud bars. On a similar note, I'm not a big weekend barhopper;
I'd rather hang out at home on the back porch than shout over
tightly-clad boozers. Lest it sound like I'm an introvert, I'm not
actually quiet at all! I like trying new things (I have a list--can
you believe I've never seen Raging Bull?), staying frenetically
busy, laughing a lot, and asking questions. I like to be silly (I
am prone to breaking into dance whenever music is playing,
regardless of the situation), I like to talk about fluffy topics
like movies and food but also 'meaning of life' type stuff. People
sometimes think I'm rude or shy at first because I don't like to
play fake social games, and I'm not the most outwardly emotional
book on the shelf, but rest assured, I have emotions and will
express them more when I get to know someone. I'm also a logical
thinker and straightforward in speech--I will be honest about
anything if directly asked, and if you do something stupid, I will
most likely tell you.
What I'm doing with my life Propose an edit
I'm a psychology graduate student, so I
spend my time doing a variety of things in the realm of teaching,
learning, reading, and giving therapy.
My roommate and I are currently trying to watch all of the
movies on the Top
100 Movies of All Time list (American Film Institute, more recent
version). I think I've now seen 62 of them (no particular order).
It's a fun project! Of the ones I've seen lately, I think my
favorite is The Deer Hunter.
I'm really good at Propose an edit
making anyone feel tan, bargain shopping, knowing everyone else's
schedule, Harry
Potter or musical theatre trivia, asking
questions, making silly off-the-wall comments, singing (that is, compared to
regular people; I suck compared to opera singers), coming up with
fun creative projects
The first thing(s) people usually notice about me Propose an edit
I'm really pale, I
have kind of big ears, and I have a unique (I hope good!) fashion
sense.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food Propose an edit
Books: I recently bought a Kindle, so I've been reading a lot more.
The last two books I read were The Handmaid's Tale and Into Thin
Air. I am a big Harry Potter fan. Other books I've enjoyed: Devil
in the White City, Memoirs of a Geisha, In Cold Blood, As Nature
Made Him.
Movies: Love them! I prefer quirky offbeat comedies to
people-fall-down-a-lot blockbusters, but I'll watch just about
anything. Modern favorites include Stranger Than Fiction, Donnie
Darko, Bandits, Closer, Secretary. Older films I like are Charade,
All About Eve, The Deer Hunter, Bringing up Baby, Psycho. I've been
into documentaries lately, too.
Music: I prefer a good melody and strong lyrics. When people are
present, I listen to Ani Difranco, Great Big Sea, Martin Sexton,
Liz Phair. When no one is around, I listen to musicals. Sondheim is
fabulous, and I have a soft spot for Avenue Q and The 25th Annual
Putname County Spelling Bee.
The six things I could never do without Propose an edit
Email, good conversation, a really good pair of boots, Airborne (yes, I know it might
not actually work, so I suppose I should say I couldn't do without
the placebo effect instead), a digital camera, and Tivo.
I spend a lot of time thinking about Propose an edit
the oddities and intricacies of my friends, how people work
(psychology), that I should drink more water, how and when people
don't work (abnormal psychology), the things I really want to buy
but cannot afford, that I should dust underneath my bed, that I
really need to sell that snowboard I haven't used in 5 years,
possibly going to the gym, and if I will ever get that dream job in
that ivory tower in the sky (I picture it will look like the ivory
tower from NeverEnding Story)
On a typical Friday night I am Propose an edit
At school until past 6pm, and then I am likely to be found talking
to a friend or two, either at home, their place, or a bar, most
likely with an interesting beer and/or a bottle of wine and some
good conversation. If I'm lucky, some Wii or a great movie makes
its way into my evening.
The most private thing I'm willing to admit here Propose an edit
I'm divorced, but I'm not all torn up about it, and I'm still in
friendly-ish contact with my ex. I have to keep up with news about
my ex-dog.
You should message me if Propose an edit
You don't tend to use text-speak when typing and you know the
difference between "their," "there" and "they're." You are taller
than 5'10" (sorry, I try my best not to be shallow, but I have a
hard time dating people who are my height or shorter--one of my
quirks, I guess). You don't mind that I'm really busy and don't
have a lot of time (this has it's advantages too, as I'm unlikely
to be clingy). You don't mind lots of parentheses. You like playing
board games and you are both a gracious winner and loser. You like
long conversations that can range from silly to serious in under 5
minutes. In fact, you value silliness and spontaneity. You think
getting to know someone as a person is a prerequisite to gettin'
some. You have a witty and sarcastic sense of humor (I am pretty
impossible to offend) and are willing to try new things. And, if
you think drinking Bud Light should only be done under extreme
desperation (or, you know, if it's free, as I once had a six-pack
of Bud Light given to me by someone forever known as the "beer
fairy").
