I think people are disenfranchised from a sense of community, and so we attempt to compensate for that by finding the perfect mate. Someone who can satisfy our every desire. We are disappointed when one person fails to encompass all that we have been searching for. I think that search is unfair, to ourselves and to the people we interact with. Thus, I think that a wide circle of friends is necessary to accommodate a broader scope of our own multifaceted needs. We provide and receive different things with different people, each combination creating a new and interesting ways to learn about ourselves and each other. Humans evolved in closely knit kinship groups, and that sense of aloneness that seems to plague the modern person, I believe, is the desire to recapture that kind of extended familial closeness that we've lost in the modern age..
