My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
I'm from Wigan originally but I've been working in Manchester for about 15 years and finally moved here in 2006. I started off sharing with a couple of friends but bought my own place a few years ago and am planning on staying put for the foreseeable future.

I've been working as a civil servant since I was 19 despite originally thinking it was 'until I find a proper job', it's not exactly my dream job but I don't mind it; there's plenty of travelling so I get paid to read books a lot.

I enjoy the usual things - reading, movies, box sets (usually HBO), music, prefer pubs to clubs these days, do a bit of running and hill walking and meet a friend to play darts once a week. I love to learn new stuff and I tend to dip in and out of loads of topics at random, I've recently read up on things like Greek and Norse mythology, the crusades, psychology and Russian history.

Other than that I think I'm pretty laid back, and tend to get on with most people. I can be a bit quiet sometimes but I quite like that, I just don't always feel the need to fill a silence or contribute to a discussion unless I have something worthwhile to add I guess. I do listen though. I love to question things and I think I'm pretty good at sorting fact from opinion, I'd rather research something and get to the facts than let the tabloids try to tell me what to think about it...
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I usually work normal office hours Monday to Friday so midweek it's nothing too outrageous. Maybe a pint or two after work, occasional trip to the cinema (I like the modern classics stuff they show on a Monday in the printworks - Goodfellas, Aliens etc) or just at home reading, watching a movie or ploughing through a box set.

I've been trying to broaden my horizons a little recently and have ventured to a couple of museums, I keep meaning to check out the a central library too now that's it's reopened but haven't got around to it yet...

Weekends I sometimes go back and see my friends in Wigan for a meal and a few drinks, or I may have a quiet Saturday then go up to the Lake District walking early on Sunday.

I've just got back from Croatia (literally a couple hours ago as I'm writing this) and am looking to go to Iceland later in the year to hopefully see the northern lights.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Empathy, tolerance, so a good listener I guess. I also love maths, logic and problem solving and am not bad at those. I don't really like to sell myself...
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Help your potential matches find common interests.
Mishmash of favourite books and authors: Iain Banks (with or without the M), Steven Eriksen, Pratchett, Robert Rankin, Kafka, Sergei Lukyanenko, Milan Kundera, John Steinbeck, Catch 22, His Dark Materials, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harry Potter, David Eddings, George RR Martin (started on the books many years before there was a TV series)

Some of my favourite movies: Pan's Labyrinth, Pulp Fiction, 12 Monkeys, LOTR (Fellowship is my fave of the 3), most of the new Marvel stuff, Goodfellas, City of God, Aliens (prefer it to the first one), Trading Places, The Lives of Others, the old Star Wars and the new Star Trek.

TV: Firefly, The Wire, Sopranos, The Shield, Family Guy, Spaced, Parks and Recreation, Justified, Deadwood, GoT.

Music: Pixies, Radiohead, The Cribs, Arcade Fire, Rolling Stones, Spiritualized, The Strokes, The Cure, James, Morcheeba.

Food: my favourite at the moment is Thai (really like going to Chaophraya) but I also love Indian and Italian, I've just been to the Armenian Taverna which was good although I'm not convinced the cuisine was particularly Armenian.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
A good book
My phone*
Strong coffee
Friends and family
My passport

*craftily covering music and internet in one
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
How I'm going to spend my inevitable lottery win. I want a house with a swimming pool so I'd better wait for a rollover.

My next holiday, I'm going to Dubrovnik in October, can't wait, I didn't get away at all last year due to work so I'm really looking forward to it :)

Edit: just back from Dubrovnik, I didn't want to leave. Sulking now I'm back and have to go to work and stuff
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Sometimes I'll be having a few drinks after work or out for a meal somewhere. Or if I've got something planned for the weekend it will just be a quiet one, maybe a movie or just getting stuck into a book and/or a takeaway
You should message me if
Offer a few tips to help matches win you over.
Please feel free to message me first if you think we'd get on, I hate writing first messages, never quite sure what to put.

I've answered loads of questions and elaborated on quite a few, I think they probably give a better idea of the kind of person I am rather than the rest of my profile...
