My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
I really like simplicity, though that can be very complicated. After twenty-three years of teaching, I have retired and moved into a new phase of life. I'm looking for someone to share in those new adventures. Now, that potential significant other may have a career to pursue and a busy life to juggle. I'd plan to catch a ball or two to help out, but I'm there for support, not to say, "Quit and be with me!" I hope the new freedom will help rather than hurt a new relationship.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I'm trying to be as productive as I can be, but also taking time to enjoy special moments. I'm already digging up the ground for my spring garden; I'm working on some writing projects; I've got a couple house chores. It all sounds boring, but being able to laugh together about those day to day moments (or cry or comfort) is still something vital that I seek. And, of course, the sound of ocean waves calls me for a beach trip or two, along with a few more exotic places on my list (Paris, anyone?).
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
I've had three different careers: high school teacher, radio personality (that sounds pretentious--I was a guy who talked and played music and tried to entertain), and college professor. I was "good" at them all. But through it all, I've tried to live by some principles: treat others as I want to be treated (sometimes that means that I may have to say, "What you've done isn't right" because that's the way I'd want to be treated should I do wrong); try to understand how to love as well as I can (I'm still learning); try to fathom the workings of a Higher Power (here's where faith has to end up playing a role). I'll always be trying to get better.
The first things people usually notice about me

I don't like these sections because I've never really asked anyone, "What do you notice about me?" I like the question thing here on OKCupid, but many can be answered very differently by men and women, and I'm not sure if there is some kind of gender-modifier in their little computer. "Do you prefer to be taller than your significant other?" I say, "yes," you say, "no." But that doesn't make us incompatible.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Help your potential matches find common interests.
Since I mainly read my students' work during the academic year, I don't get to read as much as I'd like, but I've turned to audiobooks so I read in the car, while gardening or working out, and I treat myself to all kinds of things from Jack Reacher to Barbara Kingsolver (believe it or not) to Game of Thrones. Tennessee Williams is my favorite modern playwright. I looove music of all kinds though rap hasn't qualified in my definition of music. It may sometimes be raunchy poetry set to a beat or even decent poetry with a rhythm. I like opera Ok, but I have to understand the words to really appreciate it. Foodwise, I'm a spicy man, and I'm a cooking fool.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
Here's another one of those categories that I find difficult. A whispered word of affection like "I love you"? A sunrise that pinks up the sky? A dog's wagging tail? A sweet, sincere kiss after a long day of work? Do you want me to write a book? Life is rich and I have not been poor in it.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
I'm looking toward the bottom of that proverbial hill (I know that I'm over it), but how far I have left to travel before I reach it is unknown, so I think about the journey I'm going to take on my way there.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
I hate for a day to be typical.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
So this category is supposed to have me admit a private thing? That's a bit contradictory.
