My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
My name is De Montaigne, and I love warm hugs.

I am endeavoring to be more like Olaf....

I love trail running, creek dipping, moon watching, storm playing, mud between the toes and raindrops on the head.

I have moved to Chicago, which is not a culture or environment with which I am familiar. I am trying to find the beauty here, and some like-minded people, but I fear that most like-minded people have homes in the mountains while travelling on a shoe-string budget throughout the world.

In the interim, between this home and the next, I am trying to make the best of it. I bike to and from work, and when I have the time, take the trails and pretend that the incessant noise from traffic is really the roar of a gorgeous waterfall hidden behind a copse of oak, maple and chestnuts.

I have discovered a great joy. I bike 12 or so miles home from work, along paths beneath a canopy of trees, listening to Will and Ariel Durant's Story of Civilization Volume VIII, The Age of Louis XIV. It covers the years from 1648 to 1715; the ending of centuries of warfare based on faith, and the beginnings of the scientific revolution.

Update: On vacation in Asheville. I've been taking three hour trail runs in Pisgah National Forest discovering the most incredible rhododendron enshrouded creeks, waterfalls and boulders. It is a peaceful thrill, a calm explosion, an intense release. Running trails through the wilderness, all ones worries, and expectations, and disappointments, and everything that throttles our minds in daily life dissipates, leaving an emptiness that fills with the joy of being alive.

I'm looking for someone who values what is real in life. Someone who would live with me in a cabin on the side of a mountain, raise children together, live simply, and join me in exploring the world on a budget. If she would run trails with me, raft rivers together, and play in the moonlit snow, so much the better.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Impromptu Rammstein dance party!!!!

Life has it's own rhythm, sometimes you just got to let it lead and enjoy the adventures along the way. Figuring out how I can get back to traveling, exploring, writing, discovering and indulging in the cornucopia of life.
Trying to figure out if I can live in Dublin, Ireland for part of each year.
Studying Buddhism again and trying to practice mindfulness. Right now, for example, I am typing on a computer.
I just now got back from experiencing one of my favorite sensations; I ran over two hours through the mist in the National Forest, the few people I passed full of joy and smiles and friendly greetings, there was laughter, there was beauty, there was the magical feeling that out of the mists could come anything, dreams could come true, boundaries between worlds crossed, time scrambled, long forgotten friends and lovers found. Climbing towards Rattlesnake Lodge, a black-haired beauty emerged from the mists, accompanied by a gorgeous ivory-colored dog. She was giddy from the hike and the mists and the mountains, her greeting sprang from her lips like a kitten pouncing on slippers.
I looked for her, on the way back down from Rattlesnake Lodge, but she had disappeared back into the mists.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
I have a particularly poor perspective from which to judge what I am good at, but I love to write, explore and discover new things. I try to take the time to watch and listen, suspending the urge to prematurely interpret through the filter of my prejudices and allow myself the opportunity to discover new things that I wasn't aware of before and things that cause me to change my mind, developing over time better understanding. I am also good at seeing both the good and bad in people and situations, treasuring the good while minimizing the bad. Except of course for my sainted grandmother who was entirely good.

I have ceased to speculate on what goes on in the minds of others.

Will and Ariel Durant's The Story of Civilization, Joe Abercrombie, Jared Diamond. I just finished Crosby's The Columbian Exchange and have started Mann's 1491 and then 1493. The Dark Beyond the Stars by Frank Robinson, Memories, The Origins of Totalitarian Democracy by Talmon, Essays in Positive Economics, philosophy books on pragmatism, positivism and Zen, especially DT Suzuki. So many awesome books still to be read!

I often have impromptu Rammstein dance parties with my son.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
I have done without, but I am a huge fan of the hot shower, a comfortable bed, some place to run, something new to explore, mountains and a gurgling creek, and a beautiful woman to share adventures with.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Lately, the concept of articulated knowledge and tacit knowledge, how beautiful the trail is, and the adventures I still want to experience.
Since I started reading Crosby and Mann, I've spent a lot of time thinking about the state of the Americas pre-Columbus.

I've been thinking lately a lot about what I want in life. Long term I want a family, to be married to an insatiable woman who loves sex and loves me (and specifically loves to have sex with me...) whom I madly adore, children that I nurture, love and teach, to travel extensively, to be constantly exploring and discovering both the outer world and the inside world, and to write. I want to surround myself with love and laughter, and to celebrate life.
In the short term, until I find that woman, I want a friend and regular sex partner with whom I can have fun with.
I'm also deciding whether to move in the next couple of months. If I am checking you out remotely, it's because I'm interested in your town. Specifically I'm looking at Portland, Seattle, NW Washington state, and Denver areas. Give me a reason to move there! Or entice me with tales of your home town...
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Haring the Blue Dress Hash! Come on out Saturday July 27. Details on Asheville Hash on meetup.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I have been wrong about just about everything at one point or another in my life. I'm just trying to get progressively less wrong.

You enjoy experiencing life and aren't so caught up in all the things that don't matter.... or if you think beautiful bald heads are simply irresistible and can't help yourself.
