My Self-Summary

Gah! I really hate filling these forms out...
if you're interested, just ask and I'll share.

In the meantime, a few things to know - written out in a random order of whatever comes to mind:
»I'm not your typical... anything.
»I have a good, often ridiculous, sometimes tasteless sense of humor. Imagine a geeky kid who was exposed to Monty Python at the tender age of 5: puns, dry wit, oblique pop culture references, sharp remarks on cue, strange situationist type frolicking. Sometimes you'll find yourself rolling your eyes or trying to resist laughing, that's fine, I don't mind. I believe that everything is open to well placed humor, including ourselves.
»I smile a lot. I've got two huge marks on my face from all the smiling.
»Adventurous, outdoors-y.
»I'm well educated, and I've been a good kid. Yay.
»I am athletic. Played soccer for most of my life, now an avid cyclist (averaging 300 miles/week). I love to climb, and I race.
»Passionate about bikes (bicycles, not motorcycles)
»Well traveled, worldly. At least I'd like to think so.
»I've chased down muggers twice, and was successful once. The other time I had to back off after being shot at.
»I like to use my hands, and I'm creative about things.
»Lover of art, design and music.
»Tend to keep high standards for myself and how I live my life.
»I do things with intention, no matter how spontaneous or planned, and I am very thorough in what I apply myself towards or produce. I never half-ass anything.
»I've done a lot and have countless tales to share of adventures and diverse experiences - and I'm just getting started in this life.

What I’m doing with my life

»Thinking about what I'm doing with my life. Aren't you thinking about what you're doing with your life?

The etceteras:
»Working on various entrepreneurial projects... building capital.
»Meditating on things in my heart and head while making things and applying myself.
»Riding my bikes, everywhere
»Dancing
»Leading large groups of people on fascinating, intelligently themed courses of discovery in the middle of the night.
»Giving a lot of energy into a county-wide non-profit organisation.

yadda yadda yadda, blah, blah, blah....

Let's talk about you - I'm sure it's far more interesting!

I’m really good at

»»Paying attention, noticing details, listening.
»»Remembering things - I've been blessed and cursed with a really thorough memory.
»»Climbing up mountains - whether on foot or by bike.
»»Designing and making things... graphic things, jewelry, furniture.... and on and on and... Fixing things, too, but they're never things that I've made, I swear!
»»Parallel parking: yeah I went to UCLA, I know how to work parking miracles.
»»Lots and lots of stamina. Lots.
»»Traveling places - anywhere.
»»Talking to strangers, asking directions.
»»Figuring out location, orientation and navigation.
»»Dancing.
»»Being prepared for things... seriously. Random things? Either totally prepared or adept to adapt.
»»A lot of things besides filling in boxes on a website, really!

The first things people usually notice about me

The curly hair or the smile plastered across my face.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Too many to list, so here's a sampling that you can use to figure out the rest, "Pandora-style"

Books__
To be honest, I haven't been a huge book-reader lately. I'd like to be, but my mind has been oriented less around fiction these days. A few books that come to mind as favorites: Everything is Illuminated, many works by Dave Eggers, As I Lay Dying (Faulkner)... poetry by contemporary poets, Hafiz, Rumi, Pushkin, Omar Khayyam...
However, I've been reading publications. Favorites include: Monocle, Dwell, Cabinet, Good, ReadyMade, Étapes, Eye.

Film__
Baraka, Once Upon a Time in the West, Crash, The Royal Tenenbaums, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Life is Beautiful, anything Monty Python, Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain, Empire of the Sun, Les Triplettes de Bellevile, Cidade de Deus, Lawrence of Arabia, La Haine, Donnie Darko, animated flicks like Up!, Wall•E, films by Wes Anderson, Michel Gondry (Science of Sleep, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), documentaries....

Music__ (oh, it's eclectic)
breaks, funky breaks, lots of world fusion, asian/african/brazilian beats, Nigerian Jazz, the White Stripes, Dead Kennedys, the Arcade Fire, Ladytron, Four Tet, Subhumans (UK), J Dilla, the Roots, Depeche Mode, Telefon Tel Aviv, Johnny Cash, the Clash, Prefuse 73, The Album Leaf, Pink Floyd, E.L.O., Radiohead, Shpongle, Younger Brother, the Mountain Goats, classical (Beethoven, Debussy), ... Anything with a great beat and solid groove to it. I love music with a great 'world' beat, near eastern, brasileño, african beats, nigerian funk, 70's brasileño funk, jazzy downtempo beats (Kruder+Dorfmeister, Kid Loco, Masters at Work, others), Progressive House, 80's new wave and alternate. Oh yeah, breaks. Funky breaks. Mmmm...better be funky. I'm talkin' funkay kinda funky. So funky you can feel the funk oozin' through you hours later. So funky that your ass goes groovily down to the floor and back up with the bass. So funky that if it were played at a club James Brown would be the bouncer (yes, from beyond the grave) saying "HEY! OW! I NEED THOSE BREAKS! HIT MEH! HEY" every time he feels the funk. That Funky. So funky that you want to have some of it like take out - have it to go.

Food__
Anything under the sun.

The six things I could never do without

Let's start off with not limiting myself to six things, but really just knowing that the essentials to living include air, water, food, shelter, and other things we tend to take for granted... all the way down to DNA and chemical bonds which make it all work.

Zooming way, way out:

»My family + friends. I do everything I can for them, make myself available and provide. They are my true wealth, and I appreciate them in every way.

»Expression of emotion - whether it's laughter, crying, exaltation, or anything that is a pure, bold expression of feeling.

» Love, and everything about it. That indescribable feeling that compels us to do what we do, the acts of love, its unexpected nature, how it empowers people and sometimes renders people powerless. No, really - this thing, this emotion, this uncontainable and unpredictable desire is fascinating. Could you imagine a life without ever having experienced this emotion?

»Food. All types: Sweet, spicy, foreign food (but what's foreign after living in LA for so many years?), finger food, fried, savory, spicy, sweet, succulent, exotic, anything prepared with love and a passion for the senses. I'm a foodie, and I love to share a fabulous meal with great people.

»Music. I need this like platelets in my blood, it's almost necessary for me to function at all. Truly.

»Contrast, color, sight, sound - art and beauty.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

»Things I'd like to make
»Places I'd love to explore
»Things I want to learn
»How things work, and how everything is interconnected
»How I can improve in... [fill in the blank here]
»The color, shape, texture and sound.
»The details and the bigger picture.
»All the fascinating possibilities out there that life can offer.

On a typical Friday night I am

Probably having an easy night, meeting up with a friend or two for some great food and wine, maybe an art opening, and most likely getting some rest for Saturday's adventures! If it's a full moon, I may be dancing and camping out in the desert/forest.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

Three things:
»I easily come to tears when I'm enthralled in laughter, and pleasure.
»I'm easily captivated by the emotions drawn out in film. I wear my heart on my sleeve, I'm quite passionate about things and readily express emotion... add in the enthralling appreciation for art and music, ta-da: I'm tearing, flinching, over run with joy or clenching the chair with each scene.
»I have a huge sensitivity to disrespect and violence against women. That film "Death Proof?" I hated the first half of it. Second half? Hell yeah! Get revenge, kill that bastard!

You should message me if

...you have some interest in doing so. (duh?)

Message me if you're: up for semi-intelligent conversation, have a great sense of humor, want to go for a ride, would like to explore somewhere or something new and fascinating, are interested in doing something that invites discovery and adventure, or are a freak, geek, athlete, artist, or just awesome.
