My Self-Summary
So, how does a person describe oneself in such a way as to be honest, yet intrigue people enough to striking up a conversation? Don't quite know, so if you do, feel free to pass on the secret...
Here goes: I’m a female who has a thing against pink and dresses. I love computers, but was never a hard core techie hence I do project admin/management rather then development. I’m the kind of person that makes friends easily and am usually the one cheering people up if they are down. I get excited about stuff pretty easily… though it’s usually about stuff like bikes, cars, movies, gadgets and some random scientific discovery someone made…
Random Factoids about South Africa (since i usually get asked things):
- South Africans speak British as opposed to American English, but the local variety has been influenced by many languages. Yes, Afrikaans is one of the languages spoken here, but it's just 1 of 11 official languages (we sometimes take equality a little too seriously)
- We're on the tip of Africa in the south hemisphere, so when you chaps in Europe and Northern America have winter, we are having summer
- No, I don’t have pet lions or tigers (I have to visit a nature reserve just like the rest of the planet)
- I don't live in the bush... the Greater Johannesburg area has around 8 million people... so it classifies as a metropolis
- Nicknames for Johannesburg are Jozi and Joburg
- Joburg drivers are known for being impatient drivers, in comparison to Cape Town and Durban, that is easy
- Joburg has the largest man made forest
- We have only had snow 5 times in recorded history
- Joburg has the largest dry port in the world (bet you didn't know that one)
- The diversity is the main thing i love about this city
- The Military Museum in Joburg has 1 of only 6 original ME 262 bombers from WWII (i got to climb on it)
- To the west of Joburg is The Cradle of Mankind, where forty percent of all the world's human ancestor fossils have been found. What is amazing is that something like 7 yrs later, they are still trying to excavate a skeleton found of "Little Foot". Now that is a true testament of patience.
- And yes we have everything here (even SciFi Cons and Rocketry Societies)
What I’m doing with my life
I’m really proud of people who have figured out what their life is all about. As for myself, there is a ton of stuff I have figured out, but I’m still learning…and loving that fact.
What I do know is that I finally have a job I like; I have come to terms with the fact that family usually hurt a person the most (but you end up loving them anyway); there is way too much to learn about this world (let alone the universe); good friends are treasures one keeps close; relationships have a way of teaching a person more about who they are and filling in a profile is a fun way to dodge some paperwork.
I’m really good at
- Being a friend
- Finding more things I wanna learn (but never get around to)
- Collecting books I never get around to reading
- Great at organising Social Stuff: e.g. Planned a day trip for some of the work mates that were visiting from overseas... Took them to a craft's market to get trinkets, Cultural village for an intro in South African Tribes, Nature Reserve to see predators and play with wild cubs, and ended off the day with a visit to Sterkfontein Caves... one of the best archaeological places in the world when it comes to fossils, and we had time for a drink, lunch and i had them back at the hotel shortly after the sun went down. :)
- Great at making lists: just trust me on this one. I'm a spreadsheet Nazi... you will have as complete a list of anything...and it will be logically arranged and look good to boot.
- Hording Stuff: Digitally that is.
- Being Friendly: I'm usually the one helping everyone else with little tasks that they think i can do better... it's called practise people.
- Figurines: I usually get away with picking up friend's figurines mid game and not getting murdered... i think it's cos i always put them back exactly where they were :)
- Giving scratches and hugs: I have only ever met 2 dogs in my whole life that didn't take to me...otherwise every dog and cat i interact with usually ends up adoring me... oh and it only took me 1 yr to reprogramme my boy cat, after i adopted him, to get him used to hugs and kisses
- Seeming Innocent: Somehow cos i am so cheerful and chirpy, i sometimes come up as seeming young (doesn't help that most friends and work mates are at least 3 yrs older then myself). But im really optimistic, which means i know the harshness that this world is capable of, but prefer to keep the hope that humanity is growing in a good way mostly. So the point, i'm not a ditz, or innocent.
- Rearranging salt shakers on tables into more logical and symmetrical configurations... well, okay...it's a almost compulsive thing... but i notice friends only bring it up with we're sitting waiting for the food order and never when i rearrange their kitchen contents for them... i hate double standards ;)
- Surfing while friends are busy with Fantasy Table Top games...
- Confusing people with a comment like “That’s a nice butt!” (It takes them a moment to realise I’m talking about a passing bike or car, not a person)
The first things people usually notice about me
- Eyes (it's the sad puppy/kitten eyes when i really want something)
- Smile (i've checked with the mirror...i'm not convinced)
- Accent (it's an oddball... not South African English, not British, not American, not Australian that's for sure... but French has been a suggestion)
People that know me usually point out the following things: I’m a geek; never wear a skirt/ dress; mostly wear black/dark colours; adore shiny things (bikes, cars, particle accelerators, R2-D2, Figurines) and have a passion for Science.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
Music: I’m pretty easy going, anything other then dance and bubblegum pop. My current play list consists of: 30 seconds to Mars, My Chemical Romance, Iron Maiden, Incubus, Apocayptica, Korn, Lacuna Coil, Marilyn Manson, Metallica, Mudvayne, Seether, Tiamat, Tool, Type O Negative, Good Charlotte, Blink 182, P.O.D…
Favorite TV Shows: Most things are okay, though I have a preference for SciFi…Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, Star Trek (I can only do TOS once), Supernatural, Dead like Me, Pushing Daisies, Numb3rs, Heroes, Firefly, Threshold, Xena, Angel, Due South, The Outer Limits, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Torchwood, Andromeda, Farscape, SeaQuest DSV, Dark Angel, Lois and Clark, Tru Calling, latest fav is Sanctuary and I'm waiting with baited breath for Dollhouse...
Favorite Movies: Most things except horror… Tim Burton's, Star Wars (IV, V and VI), Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, Beetle Juice, Edward Scissorhands, Predator, Stargate, True Lies, Lord of the Rings, Equilibrium, The Usual Suspects, 300, Monster Inc, Big Fish, Nightmare Before Christmas, Beauty and the Beast, Amelie, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, IronMan, Bourne Trilogy, Pan’s Labyrinth, The Prestige, Good Will Hunting, Pirates of the Caribbean, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Serenity, The 5th Element, Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride, Ever After, The Iron Giant, The Shawshank Redemption, Chocolat, The Phantom, Transformers, Dogma, Frequency, most things by John Cusack…
Favorite Books: Currently on my bookcases…SciFi (Tolkien, David Gemmell, Raymond E Feist, Janny Wurts, Robin McKinley, Terry Pratchett, Anne McCaffrey, Ursula Le Guin, Orson Scott Card, hard SciFi is on my hdd), Science (History, Astronomy, Biographies, Essays on the Future of Space, and my favourite Quantum Physics) Cultures (Ancient History, Evolution of Society), Fortifications (most on Castles), Weapons and Strategy (Pre Renaissance) and other stuff I can’t remember the classification of…
Food: pretty much anything...except sushi or insanely hot stuff... i'm not a particularly fussy eater... pizza with friends is always more enjoyable then a meal in some fancy restaurant...
The six things I could never do without
1) Friends: Help keep me semi sane...
2) Curiosity: I sometimes wish i could live for a millenia, just so i could try and learn more about this universe and humanity.
3) Humour: a prerequisite for life and being my friend.
4) My Pets: i'm addicted to my two fuzzballs (read cats) and now own 3 tarantulas.
5) The Internet: i have to reread up on stuff i'm interested in... usually Quantum Physics, i think i would go mad if i couldn't Google things
6) Food Addictions: Chocolate/Popcorn/Coke/Coffee
I spend a lot of time thinking about
What celebrities are thinking when naming their kids? I mean. Gwen Stefani naming her kid Zuma? Nice one, if Zuma comes into power in the next election, her son will have a president with the same name, too bad this Zuma thinks showering is a good AIDS prevention method! Yep, sadly we have a ton of people with double digit IQs.
I live for moments of connection. Those random moments, where for a second the perspective shifts and for a moment one gets a sense of our scope of our civilisation yet how really small we are in this huge universe…
I love living in such a diverse society in a young city. For as long as I can remember, I have always wondered about why people act/are they way they are, and random things like how awesome standards really are. I mean think about the hundreds of organisations and governments. The fact that everyone is able to share information and data across all that is pretty cool.
One thing that has always fascinated me when i was young, was just how many potential kindred spirits were out there. People that share the passions and interests i do. I used to wonder after making an awesome friend, just who else was out there waiting to be met. So i guess it isn't too surprising why i'm on this site :)
Who I would be, had I made different choices. What if my brother and I had moved to Oregon (USA)? What if I had moved to France with my mom? How would that have changed what my interests are? What work I would do (would I have studied Anthropology instead of IT)?
I once read somewhere a piece. I was so long ago i don't remember where or the context, but the general idea was someone telling a tale of a choice a person was given a choice... to stay on their homeworld and make a normal life for themselves. The usual things such as human companionship and children. The other choice was to get on a starship and leave their planet to spend eternity travelling amongst the stars... every once in a while i think of the tale again... and ponder what choice i would make. A part of me thinks i would chose to stay, yet sometimes i wonder if leaving humanity behind would be a cost worthy of joy exploring the potential wonders of the universe would bring. Of course the question is pointless if the ship doesn't have a FTL engine, since i'd go insane by the next star system with boredom...
Also...even wondered just how much of stuff exists? Like how many bricks have been created in the history of mankind? Or how much steel is out there... think of all the cars and ships... or just how much weight a 747 actually lifts when it takes off... or when a rocket goes into space... how many people actually have a concept of how huge those things really are...
Ever wonder how easily we could disappear? Whenever i visit my uncle's grave i walk amongst the other tombs and wonder what kind of people they were. Were they loved? Who still visits them? It makes you realise how easily an individual is lost among the masses. It also makes a person understand that urge to breed.
But even having children doesn't save the memory of a person, as each generation passes, so too does the knowledge of individuals that have come before. And even leaving a mark in some field of knowledge can't guarantee immortality in memory... i think that is why i am saddened by the thought of languages going extinct... each language that we lose is a culture that once lived and thrived and added in some small way to the civilisation that is our lives today. By not caring we are dishonouring their memory and contribution to who we are today.
Latest wondering thought is mostly around Rocketry... finally got to a rocket launch... and i am so hooked. Though i think i'll wait until later this year to get my own... gives me enough time to get through all the ref material on the net :)
On a typical Friday night I am
On a Friday I will either be at home surfing the net, watching a season of a series, out catching a movie/dinner with friends, or visiting some gaming buddies to raid their hdds :)
The most private thing I’m willing to admit here
Oh, and i have weird classifications for cute things... current things classified as cute are R2-D2, WALL-E, The tumbler, any bike with a cute butt, any car with a cute butt, geeky males, Remans (see Star Trek), cats, most dogs (especially my friend's Basset Hound), Armoured Vehicles (yes Tanks), Predators (yes those chaps with the hunting instinct and cool shoulder cannons), and the latest additions have been Tarantulas and Rocketry...
You should message me if
- You’re interested in making another friend in cyberspace
- Have a sense of humour
- Are not put off by a someone who gets excited about random things like a new scientific discovery, a new SciFi film/series or the fact that the CMS/Atlas Experiments are the coolest things ever (they are so pretty and shiny)
Don't message me if:
- You think you can convince me that i MUST have a relationship this second and it must be with you. I'm not hunting for a relationship, so don't bother if you can't deal with only being a friend.
- If your going to say i look Hot, Sexy or something along those lines. I don't care what you think of looks, looks are not really relevant to a digital friendship.
- Looking for casual sexual partners. Been there, done that, so not interested at this point in my life.
- A friend/match rating under 50%. The system isn't perfect, but it is semi accurate. And i'm not interested. I'm pretty easy going, and my questions reflect it. So we won't be even close in shared opinions.
- You were one of those people that believed the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) was going to destroy the world.
