My self-summary Propose an edit
I belong to the friendly, smiling offshoot of the self-styled
brooding intellectual archetype, a laid-back knowledge junkie
hunting for accomplices. By day, I'm a software engineer with a
penchant for electronic esoterica. By night, I'm a jack of all
trades. I love technology, but I'm just as happy hiking or in a
kayak as I am at a keyboard or wielding a soldering iron. I dabble
in literature of all flavors and games of all sorts. I strive to
appreciate beauty both real and abstract wherever it can be seen: a
smile, an ocean vista, the warmth of the sun on an otherwise cool
day, an elegant algorithm, or a cleverly constructed metaphor. And
all of it, I've found, is best when shared with friends--the
quirkier the better.
What I'm doing with my life Propose an edit
I'm making significant headway in a career working with some of the
more eccentric areas of software. When off the job, I'm also a bit
of a tinkerer and have a handful of projects that I work on for
fun, with little regard for necessarily finishing them. I read a
lot of way-out-there speculative fiction and technically oriented
nonfiction, and occasionally history or philosophy. I sometimes
decide I could be a writer, but I've been wrong thus far. I'm
frequently moved to drive westwards and tromp around in the woods
or splash around in a kayak for a day to flex some muscle and
exercise the color sensing abilities of my retinas--for a man
cannot forever live by fluorescent light alone and yet remain a
man.
I'm really good at Propose an edit
My strengths lie in listening, learning, and supplying surprisingly
relevant facts while making surprisingly irrelevant observations.
The first thing(s) people usually notice about me Propose an edit
I'm tall and thin, and I'm unlikely to speak without something
meaningful to say.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food Propose an edit
Jorge Luis Borges's essays and short stories; The Fountains of
Paradise, Childhood's End, and Arthur C. Clarke's other fiction;
the Silmarillion; On The Beach; Dracula; Surely You're Joking, Mr.
Feynman
Primer, Sneakers, Hot Fuzz, Shadow of the Vampire, The Game
A smattering of classical stuff, particularly the first movement to
the Moonlight Sonata, Adagio for Strings, the Ballet from Gayne,
and lots of other less predictable things including random tracks
from movie scores and, oddly enough, Led Zepplin's Kashmir.
Touristy New England fare: fish and chips, fried scallops and
clams, and of course chowder.
I spend a lot of time thinking about Propose an edit
How beautiful special relativity is. What I'm going to have for
dinner. The magic that
are sequential logic circuits. How government might work better, or
whether we're simply doomed. Fun things to do or places to go next
weekend. What could happen in a thousand years, ten thousand years,
and more.
On a typical Friday night I am Propose an edit
Hanging around with friends, deep in a book, or buried in a
(probably ill-conceived and incompletely thought out) project. Most
likely, some combination of the above.
The most private thing I'm willing to admit here Propose an edit
I often think I'd make a really good supervillain.
You should message me if Propose an edit
You can see beauty in an algorithm, a proof, the symmetry of a
novel, or a rainy day. You can watch the stars, contemplate the
physical forces that drive them to burn, recognize the vast gulfs
of time and space involved, and find there all the more beauty
because of it. You know what you want from life, and you're looking
for someone to chase after it with.
