I am geeky, active, and argumentative.

My Self-Summary

I'm working on becoming a scientist and playing hockey in my spare time. I used to read a lot, but apparently now it's only structure papers

Ok, I still read a good bit. Some scifi and fantasy, random murder mysteries, pop science and a lot of papers and articles. I watch TV a lot, but usually I save it all up for weekends, since I'm rarely home during primetime.

I'm an outspoken queer, skeptic and atheist, and I like to debate (not argue, necessarily), especially science policy. This does not mean that I'm not a nice person.

What I’m doing with my life

I'm just starting a PhD program in biology at Vanderbilt. The ultimate goal, I guess, is to stay in academia, but I'm just focusing on enjoying grad school and the research I get to do. I'll be in Nashville for at least five years, after all, and I feel like it's way too early to look at the endgame! When I'm not studying or in the lab, I'm trying to stay active with taekwondo and hockey, taking care of my puppies and learning to be a Tennessean.

I’m really good at

Science, writing, teaching, sarcasm, standardized tests, driving, directions, grammar, spelling, multi-tasking

The first things people usually notice about me

I suppose that I have no control over my hair, own no makeup whatsoever and have no fashion sense. After THAT, that I'm opinionated, argumentative, sarcastic and confident.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: Ender's Game, Harry Potter, The Ancestor's Tale, The Beak of the Finch, A Short History of Nearly Everything, The Dreyfus Affair

Movies: Star Wars

TV: ohhh, how I love my SciFi. Doctor Who, Torchwood, Stargate (SG-1 and Atlantis), X-Files, Heroes, Battlestar Galactica, True Blood, Supernatural. Also, NCIS, House, Grey's Anatomy, Castle, The Mentalist, Californication, Better Off Ted, um, etc. I really LIKE TV, though I have a tendency to save a bunch of shows up and then watch them all at once, it's not like I'm often home at primetime. And I hate commercials.

Music: Jeffrey Foucalt, Peter Mulvey, Kris Delmhorst, Guy Clark, Richard Shindell, folky-Americany-country-y-bluegrassy stuff. But sometimes not!

Food: Pick an ethnicity, I like the food. I really love coffee ice cream, too.

The six things I could never do without

My dogs (that counts as one, they're a collective!), computers (also collective!), bookcase (ha, see what I did there?), hockey skates (one unit), teddy bear aaaaand...oh, phone, I guess.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Plots of science fiction shows, religion and the lack thereof, evolution and science generally, hockey.

On a typical Friday night I am

Glad the week's over, catching up Tivo with a beer and the puppy.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

Hm...I feel rather inexperienced when it comes to sex and relationships.

You should message me if

Well, obviously, if you think I'm interesting!
