My self-summary
I like my life, but I also kinda want to break out of it sometimes.

I like watching good TV/movies, listening to music, and reading.

I like new ideas, and new vocabulary for understanding/explaining myself and the world. I think ideas matter, even if it increasingly feels like it's just to me. I think language matters. "Politics and the English Language" represent, y'all! Yes, I'm a bit of a nerd (for sufficiently large values of "a bit", anyway).

I approach the world with a sense of humor. Life can be pretty fucked up, but I'd rather laugh about it than cry about it. Being witty/sarcastic is pretty much one of my go-to modes.

I am more fun than I look. No seriously, I swear.

I am about 90% confident that I look significantly better in real life than in most photos. Though I suppose there's a slight (vanishing really) hypothetical chance of personal bias there.
What I’m doing with my life
I am pursuing my Ph.D in Political Science here at UCSB.
I’m really good at
Listening. I'm a good listener. I care about what the people I'm talking to have to say, and I'm good at figuring out what they're getting at.

I'm also fairly funny. In, you know, my opinion anyway. And I'm a good writer, although I sometimes have trouble motivating myself to do it outside of school. I guess it's probably a case of when you have to do something as work all day...
The first things people usually notice about me
I've got a sense of humor, and I like joking around with friends. I can be sorta sardonic/sarcastic, but generally not in a mean way.

I'm tall-ish.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Too many to name here. But I'll put some of each for a sense of things.

Books: Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the Dresden Files, basically anything by Terry Pratchett, most stuff I've read by Gene Wolfe, the Years of Lyndon Johnson, and the odd crime or history book. And obviously I read a ton of poli sci stuff, but that's usually not terribly interesting to other people.

Movies: The Royal Tenenbaums, Tarantino's stuff (even Death Proof! well, kinda.), Fight Club, Garden State, Chocolate, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. And to be honest, I'll put up with fairly high levels of suck in the other parts of a movie if it has enough cool action/fight sequences. Although Independence Day still blows.

Shows: The West Wing, Parks and Rec, Community, 30 Rock, BtVS, Firefly, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Archer, Justified, Terriers. And while I don't watch it much anymore, classic Simpsons was basically foundational for my sense of humor. If you can whip out and/or recognize a good classic Simpsons reference? Oh, so many points to you.

Music: Fairly eclectic. Some selections - Alkaline Trio, Atmosphere, Be Your Own Pet, Eels, Green Day, some of Johnny Cash's stuff, Kanye (don't hate!), Magnetic Fields, Modest Mouse, Nirvana, Rilo Kiley, Sublime, SoaD (though I don't listen to them as much anymore), Yeah Yeah Yeahs (more their earlier stuff though). Yes, that list is alphabetical because I picked it out by scrolling through my iTunes.

Food? Not my biggest passion. Though I do love me some pizza. Mm, pizza.
The six things I could never do without
Family, friends, internet, books, music, good stories.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
The most random shit. I mean, politics a fair bit, obviously. I also find myself gaming out various implausible hypothetical scenarios, like what I'll do once I achieve my secret life-long goal of becoming Space Emperor (it's like being a regular emperor, but with SPACE! fuck yeah, space). Or how I'd make various things into movies, given the opportunity. Or... well, you probably get the idea.
On a typical Friday night I am
Might be at a party with some friends, might be studying hard, might just be chilling out with Netflix or a book.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
If you're willing to admit it to total strangers, can it actually be considered private? Besides, I already admitted that sometimes I think about becoming Space Emperor. That's not something that you'd usually admit in public, is it?
