I am oh my god, why am i on fire, and help me.

My Self-Summary

My religion is listed as atheist, but I'm looking at switching teams. Maybe for Zen Buddhism, we'll see if they give me a better offer
I'm pretty serious about following the news, and I'm at least as particular about my news sources. If I don't catch the major bulletins and at least 15 minutes of analysis from NPR in a day, I feel kind of out of touch.
I don't trust people without a sense of humor or who are easily offended.
I'm a night person, autumn is my favorite season, and I'm too hot much more often than I'm too cold. I love boating, I appreciate good grammar, and I'm not a real doctor.

What I’m doing with my life

I've got degrees in philosophy and religious studies, and I'm a financial advisor with a firm that has not collapsed. I'm pretty active; I enjoy hiking and canoeing, among other things. I study a couple of martial arts. I contribute to our local NPR affiliate in Atlanta. I play drums and classical piano, neither particularly well.

I’m really good at

Theology. And while I'm not particularly kitchen-savvy, I'm pretty good at cooking fish.

The first things people usually notice about me

I guess my height? Or when I'm sitting down and not on fire, probably my eyes.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Chris Nolan is my favorite director, and of his films, I think The Prestige is my favorite. Sorry, Batman.
I enjoy ancient epics and classical poetry. And novels involving the end of the world. I read The Road last year, and every so often I'd have to look around to remind myself of what it's like not to be living in post-apocalyptic America. Oh yeah, and Lamb. That was good fun.
As for music, I like whatever is on the radio, played at a reasonable volume.* Ok, just kidding. Seriously though, I go for a lot of singer songwriter types. Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake, Damien Rice, etc. Also Rilo Kiley, Modest Mouse, Tool, Feist. I've been on a mad Death Cab for Cutie kick for a couple of weeks now. On paper Led Zeppelin is the best band ever, but I'm not really feeling it right now. So yeah, classic, alternative, and indie rock, more or less. Philip Glass.
I cannot articulate why, but on some level, I enjoy christian talk radio, especially on long road trips.
<3 Planet Earth, particularly in high definition. It's incredible. (I mean the show, but the planet is ok too, I guess.)

*If you know this reference, we should probably just get married.

The six things I could never do without

Indoor plumbing, socks, soy milk (I just discovered it was delicious. Why did no one tell me?), intelligent discussion, and hugs.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Lately, I've been thinking a lot about whether and to what extent factual elements are contained in ancient myth and, separately, whether and to what extent mythical elements correspond to the human psyche. For example, does the overthrow of the Titans by the Olympians represent some sort of real historical event? Stuff like that.

Every so often, I'll get an idea in my head that sounds ingenious, but that, for whatever reason, I'd never actually want to do. In the past these have included starting an ironic punk band, inventing a new genre of music, writing an epic, and creating the finest sandwich in the world. Of these, the sandwich is the most likely to happen.

On a typical Friday night I am

generally doing something low key, often involving alcohol of some sort (though ideally not rubbing alcohol). Sometimes there is also dancing or fireworks (figurative and literal).

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

Music from Amelie is my go to sleep music.

I speak in iambic pentameter

(ok, not really)

You should message me if

If you're intelligent and sensible. And if you're magical, well, that wouldn't hurt.
