My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
I'm a teacher, artist, writer, and deep thinker. For years I was a community organizer around poverty issues. This led me to India and Africa as well as East Detroit. I learned a lot. I've taught at both the high school and university level, but far prefer working with high school students. That's how I am now focused on changing the world.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
For years I was a history teacher. Now I'm teaching American Sign Language. I love it. While out of the classroom, I'm running, writing, or spending time with friends.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Listening to people, engaging, teaching, writing creatively about big ideas, drawing, and working toward change in communities.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
My height, intellect, eyes, and creativity.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food

I read extensively from fiction to history to personal narrative to sociology and political thought. I'm usually working through 3 or 4 books at a time. I love NPR, particularly This American Life, All Things Considered, Radio Lab and Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me. Favorite films: Stranger Than Fiction, Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Arc, Gattaca, Fight Club, and I Heart Huckabees. I used to be a stage actor, and love the theatre as well.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
Books, art, coffee, people, time to write and reflect, and work that's meaningful.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Culture, poverty, hunger, teaching, social justice, identity and meaning.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Hanging out with other bedraggled teachers or getting some alone time in.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
When I was a kid, I thought my ears stuck out too much. My mom told me that I could train them back at night instead of getting the plastic surgery I had been saving my allowance for to get them pinned back. For quite some time I went to sleep with a gym sock tied around my ears and forehead. I don't think it did much more than leave funny, red lines across my forehead before school in the morning. My ears still stick out a bit, but I think I finally grew into them.
