Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
I've joined this site because, to steal a bit from Henry Rollins,
"I want to meet a woman who can sit me down, shut me up, and tell
me ten things I don't know. And make me laugh. I don't care what
you look like- just turn me on. And if you can do that, I will
soften your mukluks with my teeth. I will follow you on bare feet
through the snow." I'm looking for someone energetic and kind to
build a relationship with.
I'm on the introvert side, but that doesn't stop me from wanting to
be social in my own way (read: I'm not a huge fan of loud dark
parties, but moderate volume, sufficiently-lit parties are the
best). I'm a good listener. I don't always need to be the center of
I'm very passionate about the things I like. (Why be only kinda
sorta into something when you can be enthusiastic about it
instead?) I get along best with others who are the same way.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I mostly spend my time being a graduate student.
I have a low tolerance for boredom, so I like to stay active when
I'm not at work. I'm learning to rock climb and I love it. When it
isn't cold I go Dragon Boating on the lake and hiking. I really
like pub trivia and go about every week. I take care of five pets,
which includes two lovely female hedgehogs. I like to cook for
myself and for others (it's slow cooker season!). I'm part of a
group that plans the World's Largest Scavenger Hunt (really- we
were in the Guinness Book of World Records).
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Remembering the name of that person who was acting in that film
that you saw that one time.
Scrabble, Crossword puzzles
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
My ethnic ambiguity. (I really like having people guess what I am.
I hear all kinds of crazy guesses. Go on and try.)
I come across to people as very serious. This is not to say that
I'm humorless, I'm just not particularly goofy.
I'm bad at small talk- I've decided never to turn into one of those
people who talks idly about the weather all the time.

Important note: I don't really care what you like as long as you're
enthusiastic about it. I like people who read- I don't really care
if they've read the same books as me. In any case, here are a few
of my favorite things:
Books: Catch-22, Travels with Charley, The Phantom Tollbooth, The
Magicians. I read a lot of comics/graphic novels and will probably
pick up and read anything by Grant Morrison, Warren Ellis, or Jeff
Smith. I switch off between fiction and non-fiction. I'm currently
reading the Sherlock Holmes short stories.
Movies: Adaptation, Unforgiven, Mean Streets, The Apartment,
Gosford Park, Indiana Jones. I could go on and on. I've been a huge
movie enthusiast for a long time. I don't see a ton of horror
films, but everything else is fair game.
TV: Deadwood, The Wire, BrBa, Community, Parks and Recreation,
Arrested Development. I watch The Daily Show religiously. My latest
favorite new TV discovery is the recent Fargo miniseries - let me
know if you want to talk about how warmth and family win out over
nihilism and greed. Also: Black Mirror is terrific (but probably
not the best choice for what to watch on a first date).
Music: My current favorites are The Kills and The Dead Weather.
Past favorites: The Strokes, Janelle Monae, Radiohead, Beck, VNV
Nation, The White Stripes, Apocalyptica. I also have a fervent and
completely unironic love of metal music left over from my
Food: My favorite food is cooked oysters, but good luck finding
those in Ithaca. Probably one of my favorite things is going out to
eat and ordering the strangest-sounding thing on the menu. I'm
particularly fond of food that features curry. I do like going out
to eat - my favorite restaurants in Ithaca are Just a Taste and Fat
Jack's (which is a delight. If you haven't been yet, go.)
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
1. Good conversation
2. Traveling (the world is huge and interesting)
3. Tea (chemically speaking this may literally be true by
4. The movies
5. Games and puzzles
(... and of course my friends, colleagues, and family. But those
are people, not things.)
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
School and research - It's my job right now
Epidemic diseases - How to stop them (Although once I misspoke
during a presentation that made it sound like I was interested in
causing them. Embarrassing.)
What was really going on in Upstream Color.
How to live well. Not just how to make money and get by, but how to
actually live well in a fulfilling way.
How to be a better teacher. How to be a better listener.
What to read next.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Rock climbing or at the gym; having dinner out with friends;
catching a movie somewhere; playing board games.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I kinda think Friday nights are overrated. There, I said it. I like
doing things during the day, when there's sun.
I'm pretty open about myself. Just ask if you want to know.
