My answer is you squeeze as hard as possible and never let go.
If you really want to try and understand me here's a story. I had lost my left shoe saturday night/sunday morning. I was pretty sure it was in my apartment, but I did not know where. I went through everything in my room, lifting up my bed and dirty/clean piles of clothes. I could not find it. I wore a really old pair of sneakers monday, but they felt really uncomfortable without my orthotics (yeah, I'm already an old man). I decided to systematically clean my room and hope that this last ditch effort would work. After folding all my clean clothes, I go to put some dirty clothes in my hamper. Lo and behold there it was, my left shoe! I was so happy to find it that I hugged both it and its right footed partner. Then I promptly put them by the door.
