I am Artistic, Political, and Practical.

My Self-Summary

It's a bit difficult to sum up all that I am in just a few words, but here goes...

My name is Dave. I'm a musician / philosophy geek / politics junkie who happens to dabble in computer geek-ery on the side. Nobody is lining up to pay me to play guitar, so I had to figure out something to make a living.

Above all I'm passionate about music. I love playing guitar and singing in my spare time and I couldn't imagine a life without music.

Aside from music I try to 'live the informed life' through bettering myself and hopefully a few others along the way. I'm absolutely a political progressive (I hate how liberal is somehow a loaded word now) and not the least bit ashamed of it.

What I’m doing with my life

At the moment my body is adjusting to the idea of being awake before noon, and I must say that it's been less than pleasant. I've never been a true morning person, but it'll be nice to stop being a zombie.

Most of my 'spare' time is devoted to music in one way or another; most nights find me noodling on a guitar while watching the news or some interesting documentary.

I’m really good at

I know my way around a computer pretty well, and I like to think I'm competent on guitar. I've never been the type to talk up my own achievements, so maybe I'll ask you after we know each other a little better.

I know I'm not the best vocalist though I like to try, and my spelling is average at best. I've already had to use spell check a dozen times on this little profile.

The first things people usually notice about me

I'm pretty tall and I've been told that I have a bit of an intimidating air about me. Despite the exterior appearance, I'm actually quite friendly once you get to know me.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

1. I love to read and I seem to do it in spurts. I'll read several books back to back, and then I might not finish another one for a month or two. My favorite book of all time is 1984 because it fundamentally changed how I look at the world. Seeing many of its core themes becoming true unsettles me a bit. I most recently re-read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix because I enjoy the escapism of the series and I find something new each time I read one.

2. Besides news and an odd documentary here and there, I don't watch much TV. I've become a bit of an anime geek as of late, Full Metal Alchemist and Eureka Seven are probably my favorite series.

3. I'm really not much of a movie person. The last movie I saw in the theater was Twilight, and I'm looking forward to seeing Harry Potter and the Halfblood Prince. Maybe I've become jaded about movies, but I'm rarely impressed with what's new and supposedly cool.

4. Music is my life. I'll listen to anything that isn't rap or country and my collection includes everything from death metal to pop, techno, and jazz. The majority of my collection is alternative, hard rock, or metal and my favorite bands are Smashing Pumpkins, Oasis, Megadeth, Guns 'N Roses, Opeth, Alice in Chains, etc, though that can change from day to day.

As far as food goes, I like to think I'm not a picky eater. I definitely like variety and I especially love interesting ethnic food. Anyone interested in getting some pho sometime?

The six things I could never do without

Obviously things like food, water, and oxygen, but everyone knows that. How about things that make life bearable...

1. A cool guitar. I have this thing about not being able to stay in the same room with a guitar for more than a few minutes without playing at least a couple notes.

2. My laptop. I'm a geek, and I can't help it. Also indispensable for the songwriter.

3. Sleep. I know this is technically a biological need, but I really, really need it. I've heard that creative personalities need more than the typical eight hours of sleep. True or not, I get pretty cranky if I don't get enough.

4. Coffee! Instant human, just add coffee. 'Nuff said.

5. News. Socrates said "The unexamined life is not worth living.", and I definitely agree.

6. Some form of music player. Whether it be in my car or just relaxing, music is never far from my life.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Being a philosophy geek and politics junkie, I spend a lot of time contemplating the human condition and possible solutions to the ills of the world. Of particular interest is the balance between freedom, productivity, and economic justice.

On a typical Friday night I am

I really enjoy seeing live music or spending time with friends. We used to have a regular weekly D & D game, but our schedules don't really mesh so well anymore. Since money is a little tight as of late, I spend most Fridays the same as I would any other night. Perhaps someone could help me with this?

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

My screen name comes from a cover band I played in back in college. There are still a few songs that I'm completely sick of thanks to that. Anything else you'll have to ask me ;-)

You should message me if

We share common interests or if you'd like to talk about life in general or pressing issues of the day. Most of all I'm looking for someone that I can hold a conversation with. Whether it be about day to day life or important world events, communication is key.
