I am learning, dreaming, and humming.

My Self-Summary

I don't believe in online dating. I believe in bumping into the love of your life (or year, or week) by the strawberries at the farmer's market, or while watching the tide late at night, or reading under a tree at the park. But all that bumping would probably cause bodily injury anyway...

So here I am.

Saying "I am an artist (female)" in Arabic is lovely. It sounds like a new flavor of fruity gum or an 80s pop idol. Ana fanana. That's right. Ana fanana. Now you know some Arabic!

What I’m doing with my life

I have been working towards an artists' co-op/commune since I was a teenager, and now have my sister as a partner-in-crime for this endeavor. I like living like a village, I admit. And a petting zoo. Between my housemates and I, we have a ferret, a lizard, a bunny, fish, and cats. Only the bunny and two of the kitties are mine, but I love all the beasties. Nothing makes it easier to procrastinate than a kitty in your lap.

I’m really good at

Creating. I don't think I am fantastic at anything I do, but I'm good at some things (drawing, writing, photography). And I'm always working towards being better. I give myself a "shift" four or five nights a week, during which I sit at the kitchen table and "work." I work on my horror novel, random children's books, and two online comics. I stitch up holes in my housemates' things, put together scrapbooking kits and templates, and recently started fiddling with polymer clay and carving wax. I'm going back to school for veterinary medicine because I miss learning and want to open my own animal clinic (one that takes PAYMENTS =p), but literature and art will always be my living.

The first things people usually notice about me

Hair... I have a pretty young set of dreadlocks. Or, if I am wearing a top that shows my collarbone, eyes usually go straight to the ink I have there. Otherwise, I'm usually just initially noted as quiet and a little unusual. Whenever my housemates' friends come over, I am usually skanking (a strange wild dancing done to ska) with my 2-year-old niece, cleaning the house, reading, or pouring over webcomics. So I can see where the "quiet" and "unusual" thing comes from.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

My favorite book is Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahnuik. I will read anything by Haruki Murakami, Stephen King, Vladimir Nabokov, Robert A. Heinlein, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Neil Gaiman, Charles de Lint, Francesca Lia Block, or Hunter S. Thompson. (HST is my hero.) My favorite movies are Cat Soup, Sympathy For Lady Vengeance, Breakfast On Pluto, 28 Days Later, Romance & Cigarettes, and Mirrormask. I'm picky about music but can listen to almost anything. My favorite band is Murder By Death (lovelovelove). I also like Modest Mouse, She Wants Revenge, Smashing Pumpkins, Horrorpops, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Ska and blues make me particularly happy.

The six things I could never do without

"Got dirt, got air, got water; and I know you can carry on."
-Modest Mouse

I am a minimalist, really.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Monsters. Natural disasters. Zombies. Post-apocalyptic scenarios. (I'm a writer and an artist... so my mind is clogged with all kinds of things.) I also have been put in charge of my niece's early education, so I am constantly creating and destroying and recreating lesson plans for her in my head.

Sometimes I think about the pointlessness and purposelessness of life. But that's no fun. So I try to see the beauty in all the ugly, and have come to be more mesmerized by the ugly-beauty than the normal social aesthetic.

On a typical Friday night I am

No tellin'. I don't plan my days, so things just happen as I go. My roommates and I usually find ourselves playing cards, dice, or dominos (as well as drinking and/or toking) at a random friend's place on Friday nights. But I could as easily be killing zombies on my Wii or coloring with my niece Momo.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I don't keep secrets. Too much effort. Umm... I had a relationship with a male once, to "make sure". It lasted less than a year.

And most of my novels have a straight female or straight male as the lead character/narrator. Though that isn't always the truth, only a couple of my current projects have leading lesbians. I wonder if readers find that hypocritical of me?

You want. I don't mind. ^_^
