I'm a young science professional and part-time meditation instructor. I'm always looking for ways to improve my physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. I'm an enthusiastic conversationalist on pretty much anything related to hard and soft sciences, religion, etc.
Dancing, spending time on the beach (not tanning per se), swimming, and hiking is how I like to enjoy my weekends for the most part. Weekdays I'm more about relaxing at home or having a quiet night out with friends.
I have a strong belief in self-improvement, and have a keen desire to upgrade my knowledge and skill-set in a variety of ways. I'm always reading something non-fiction. I enjoy martial arts also, but I don't have a regular practice of that (yet). I'm a beginner at parkour, and still getting my bearings there.
What I’m doing with my life
I work in environmental science currently, but would like to advance onto other types of testing or research. Doing a Master's or Ph.D program would put me in seventh heaven. But at the moment I have a pretty good gig going for myself.
I’m really good at
Listening attentively, empathizing, organizing, discussing any number of topics on science/history, editing.
The first things people usually notice about me
My bright eyes and my big smile. And I have red hair, but that's
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books. I'm a pretty big fan of Gurdjieff, Castenada, Phillip K. Dick and Neal Stephenson in terms of science fiction. Most of what I read is non-fiction diet, psychology, or history (if you want titles I'll name them haha). I'm a fan of classical epics like Gilgamesh, The Odyssey, and Beowulf.
Movies. I enjoy thrillers, crime dramas, battle-of-wills westerns, science fiction, fantasy, and animated movies. Pretty much anything that isn't (A) filled with anti-heroes or other losers I don't enjoy rooting for, or (B) pulp romantic comedy. I have a soft spot for Copolla, Tarantino, and the Wachowskis.
Music, I'm a large fan of folk, electronic, post-rock, and rock-and-roll. Radiohead, Bon Iver, Burial, Arcade Fire, GY!BE, Boards of Canada, and Led Zeppelin tend to top my playlists. I'd like to be able to get into rap or classical more (cudos if you're familiar with either of those genres). I enjoy some pop songs as a guilty pleasure.
The six things I could never do without
My trusty backpack
A sense of humour
Internet (this seems to be a habit of our age)
I spend a lot of time thinking about
The meaning and purpose behind everyday events, from encounters on the street to global phenomena.
The state of the world, and how we can do our best to improve in some way.
How well I'm spending my time.
On a typical Friday night I am
Usually at home, since I like to be outside during the day instead
of night. Most of my friends are the same, but I won't say no to
dancing at a club or at a house party!
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I spend too much time thinking things through abstractly, rather than taking charge front and center. I can use hedonism as a crutch sometimes.
