My self-summary
Hey there!

I'm a half Mexican, half Catalan who lived his first 23 years in a house full of books and singing. There I learned to make brothers and sisters of my true friends and to pursue my dreams relentlessly and passionately.

What drives me is my desire to understand. I'm a skeptic at heart, and will try to scrutinize anything through science and reason (up to the most trivial things, which brings the most fun kinds of conversation).

I also love to experience art, music and literature, and to empathize and communicate as much as possible. In the end, every person has a different perspective on what it is to be human, and it is awesome to be able to bridge that gap.

That being said, one has to be able to laugh at how absurd life can be sometimes, and to create your own meaning, or at least, your own sense of humor.

I believe in books as lenses to see reality in new ways, and in bookshelves as frames for the questions you want answers for. Meaning: I read way more than I probably should (if the notion of how much I should read makes any sense, which it doesn't).

My mood in the morning improves considerably after singing a few songs (in or out of the shower). Recent studies show caffeine and sugar also help.

If you find yourself nodding and smiling while you read this, don't hesitate. Take another sip of that large coffee of yours and drop me a line, or a few.

UPDATE: After 4 amazing years living in Brooklyn, I'm back to Manhattan! On the upper East side / East Harlem side of it, to be more precise. We can explore if there are any good spots for dancing or singing around the area, let me know ;)
What I’m doing with my life
Trying to understand the world, other people, and myself.
Reading all books that seem worth reading.
Singing in crowded, public places.

Professionally? I am on my way to finish an applied mathematics PhD at NYU and loving every minute of it.

In short: you know all the cool sciency simulations and codes out there? I'm one of the guys that make the tools to make them bigger, faster and more accurate.
I’m really good at
o) Engaging in discussions and debates of all kinds
o) Being nocturnal
o) Live-band karaoke: www.youtube.com/user/vanoroce64
o) Adopting other people's accents
o) Creative writing and blogging.
o) Facebook (yeah, that's a skill these days -_- )
The first things people usually notice about me
"You're Mexican? Wait... you don't have an accent..."

Most distinctive physical features: Big brown eyes and a broad shoulder span. I've been told I give a great hug.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: Some of my favorite authors are:
Kundera, Italo Calvino, Camus, Rushdie, Murakami, Coetzee, Steinbeck, Cortazar, Borges, Dostoievsky, Kafka, Poe, Asimov, Stephenson, Hesse, Vonnegut, Juan Rulfo, Mario Benedetti, Eco, Vargas Llosa, Roberto Bolaño, David Mitchell, Jose Saramago, Javier Marias, and Goran Petrovic. (Always looking for more!).

Still getting used to my kindle.

New favorite: Alessandro Baricco's Oceano Mare

Movies: I try to watch the great movies out there, especially those with interesting plots or puzzling endings. I am also a fan of hard Sci-Fi and of foreign films. My only turn-offs are horror (not scared) and comedy that is too slapstick.

TV Shows: Game of Thrones, Big Bang Theory, House, How I Met Your Mother, Firefly, Friends, Seinfeld, Bones, Fringe.

Jon Stewart's Daily Show is one of the best ways to get unbiased news in this country.

Music: I have an eclectic taste in music, and I particularly songs with interesting lyrics or melody: Bossa Nova, Jazz, Rock in Spanish, Trova, Classic Rock, Accoustic Pop.
Bonus Points if you enjoy Jorge Drexler, Fernando Delgadillo, Vinicio du Morais or Peter Mulvey.

Food: There is a special place in my heart (ehem, stomach) for Mediterranean, Mexican and Chinese food.
The six things I could never do without
1) Close friendships with remarkable people.
2) Intellectual challenges
3) A great novel
4) Internet
5) Caffeine
6) Novelty
I spend a lot of time thinking about
What do these results mean / imply?
What was the motivation behind that person / character's actions? What was he / she thinking?
What are the limits of our understanding?
What is intelligence, consciousness or identity?
On a typical Friday night I am
No night is "typical" in New York. This town really makes you embrace and participate of the unexpected.
