My self-summary
Hey there!

I'm a half Mexican, half Catalan who lived his first 23 years in a house full of books and singing. I make brothers and sisters of my true friends, and I pursue my goals relentlessly.

I'm a skeptic at heart, up to the most trivial things. Nothing is more fun to me than a thought-provoking conversation. Every person has a different perspective on what it is to be human, and it is awesome to be able to incorporate them to yours.

On a (perhaps) less serious note, one has to be able to laugh at how absurd life can be sometimes, and to create your own meaning, or at least your own sense of humor.

I believe in books as lenses to see reality in new ways. Meaning: I read way more than I probably should (if the notion of how much I should read makes any sense, which it doesn't).

My mood in the morning improves considerably after singing a few songs (in or out of the shower). Caffeine helps, of course.

If you find yourself nodding and smiling while you read this, don't hesitate. Take another sip of that large coffee of yours and drop me a line, or a few.

UPDATE: Just back from an awesome trip to Taiwan and Japan! Man, I miss those 7 elevens.

Reading all books that seem worth reading.
Singing in crowded, public places.

I am working on an applied mathematics PhD at NYU and loving every minute of it.
I’m really good at
Engaging in discussions and debates of all kinds

The first things people usually notice about me
"You're Mexican? Wait... you don't have an accent..."

Most distinctive physical features: Big brown eyes and a broad shoulder span. I've been told I give a great hug.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: Some of my favorite authors are:
Kundera, Italo Calvino, Camus, Rushdie, Murakami, Coetzee, Steinbeck, Cortazar, Borges, Dostoievsky, Kafka, Poe, Asimov, Stephenson, Hesse, Vonnegut, Juan Rulfo, Mario Benedetti, Eco, Vargas Llosa, Roberto Bolaño, David Mitchell, Jose Saramago, Javier Marias, and Goran Petrovic.

Still getting used to my kindle. I've realized I will soon be unable to move if I keep buying (physical?) books.

New favorite: Alessandro Baricco's Oceano Mare

Movies: I am also a fan of hard Sci-Fi and of foreign films. My only turn-offs are horror (not scared) and comedy that is too slapstick.

TV Shows: Daily Show, Game of Thrones, Big Bang Theory, House, How I Met Your Mother, Firefly, Friends, Seinfeld, Bones, Fringe.

Music: Bossa Nova, Jazz, Rock in Spanish, Trova, Classic Rock, Accoustic Pop. Bonus Points if you enjoy Jorge Drexler, Fernando Delgadillo, Vinicio du Morais or Peter Mulvey.

Food: There is a special place in my heart (ehem, stomach) for Mediterranean, Mexican and Chinese food.
The six things I could never do without
1) Close friendships with remarkable people.
2) Intellectual challenges
3) A great novel
4) Internet
5) Caffeine
6) Novelty

What was the motivation behind that person / character's actions? What was he / she thinking?
What are the limits of our understanding?

Yeah, I'm a grad student. I also daydream a lot and spend inordinate amounts of time memorizing lyrics.
On a typical Friday night I am
No night is "typical" in New York. This town really makes you embrace and participate of the unexpected.
