My Self-Summary

Note from Mar 26, 2008 Current profile is at least a year old. Will update soon to take intervening time into account.

I'm a social cameleon. I'll be whatever I think fits. It's not an act, I'm just fluid and adaptive. I get along easily with almost everyone right away, but I'm dreadfully shy in public and rarely make any aggressive moves. Online I'm a little more outgoing. I laugh a lot, especially when I'm nervous. HAHAHAHAHA *cough cough* I love to make stuff with people: music, conversation, whatever. I love to help.

I just re-took the OkCupid test and was identified as The Vapor Trail. I don't know how to take that. I don't think it fits me. It used to identify me as The Loverboy. Maybe I don't know myself as well as I thought I did. Maybe the test failed. You be the judge.

What I’m doing with my life

In the very near term I'm working to increase my earnings and savings. I plan to 'retire' as soon as is practical so I can form a commune centered on providing access to technical, artistic and physical training to anyone willing to commit to participating fully. I haven't worked out all the details yet.

In the mean time I'm studying for the above. I've been reading books with my wife (stormagnet) by authors we both enjoy like Ursula Le Guin, Iain M. Banks, Neil Stephenson, Terry Pratchett, Richard Feynman, Brian Greene, Howard Bloom, and anyone else in their leagues.

I’m really good at

I am sometimes very good at writing, playing guitar, programming or conversing. Sometimes I'm no good at anything. Usually I'm good at not making trouble. I'm polite to a fault. I explain things well by listening to the person I'm talking with and negotiating meaning with them. If someone misunderstands me, I don't just say the same thing again louder.

The first things people usually notice about me

I don't think people notice me right away, and when they realize they've noticed me, I think they'd have a hard time figuring out what they noticed first. I don't have a strong presence like some people. I'm insidious. Or at least, I'd like to think so.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: The Baroque Cycle (Neil Stephenson), The Culture series (Iain M. Banks) Movies: "Blazing Saddles", "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly", "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure", "Caddyshack" Music: The Decemberists! ... But otherwise there isn't a genre which doesn't have songs I like in it. There are a few bands I don't like, but usually for very specific reasons, and most of them will have a song I do like. I can't pick a favorite song because my tastes change too often. The music I make tends to sound a little like Led Zeppelin or country music, but I'm trying to branch out. Food: I used to be very picky, but I'm learning to like a lot more food. I still have a hard time with entrees made with nuts or seeds or cooked in their oil. I haven't liked any stir-fry so far.

The six things I could never do without

I don't like how this question is phrased because it makes me sound co-dependent when I say I couldn't do without stormagnet. It's not like that, she's just very important to me. I COULD do without any of these things, they're just the six things I would want with me on a tropical island:

stormagnet, family and friends (nearly the same thing in most cases), internet access, work (I'll retire from the grind but I won't stop working), a guitar, sunshine

I spend a lot of time thinking about

The future: mine, my relationships', my job's, the country, the planet, the universe. I also think a lot about thinking, communication and symbol systems.

On a typical Friday night I am

"The same thing we do every night, Pinky: try to take over the world!"

...or I might be watching a dvd with my wife. Sometimes we have a bottle of wine (or two) and pause the movie every five minutes to talk about the amazing connections our minds are building based on the movie (and the wine).

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I probably take astrology too seriously.

You should message me if

you like to get responses from people.

It's hard to finish that sentance without sounding like a big dork. I'm trying to broaden my horizons and be less shy. What I'm most looking for on here is pen pals and new friends because the other stuff is so complicated, but I'm wide open to negotiations.
