I am optimistic, intelligent, and confident.

My Self-Summary

I am open, friendly, outgoing, romantic, opinionated, and liberal. I enjoy my life everyday and love meeting new people, trying new foods, traveling to new places, and learning new things.

Quick bio: I grew up near Cleveland, went to school out east, taught English in Kyoto for a while, then returned to the US to finish up my premed courses. I'm currently in the interview phase of the med school process.

What I’m doing with my life

I am currently teaching kindergarten but in the process of applying to medical schools. Actually, my kindergarten job totally rocks and I could go on and on about it, but I'm saving those details for the 2nd or 3rd date. lol

I’m really good at

helping, listening, communicating, problem-solving, creative brainstorming, math, science, and teaching.

I enjoy cooking and baking a lot and am pretty good at it, although sometimes my experimental nature catches up to me. :)

I have fast reflexes and am calm under pressure. As a result, I'm pretty good at speed-dependent games. I love games (cards, board games, party games, etc.).

The first things people usually notice about me

I'm outgoing and friendly.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I read the newspaper every morning and love NPR. I listen to This American Life and the New Yorker podcasts while I work out. I enjoy Kurt Vonnegut, classic sci-fi, Haruki Murakami, classic literature like Dickens and EM Forster, and nonfiction about food politics such as Fast Food Nation and In Defense of Food.

I like most movies, both serious and silly ones, but can't handle too much violence. I like comedy, chick flicks, psychological horror movies, and sci-fi/fantasy. I LOVE Harry Potter (both the books and the movies). lol Some favorite TV shows: The Daily Show, 30 Rock, Project Runway.

My music taste is rather unsophisticated- mostly 80's pop and contemporary pop with an 80's feel (David Bowie, Talking Heads, Keane, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, MGMT, etc.).

I love most foods, especially Japanese food. I'll try anything and am not picky. However, I do consider myself "sustainetarian." I made that word up. lol It means I try to make my diet as sustainable as I can (but without annoying those around me). I try to eat mostly local fruits, veggies, beans, nuts, etc., and I don't eat a lot of meat or dairy. Not gonna lie- I am a sucker for organic stuff. I try to eat seafood that is sustainably fished in a way that doesn't harm the environment. I'm not fundamentally opposed to eating meat. I'm happy to eat meat from an animal that lived a happy life on a farm near me. My dream for when I have a family is to meet a cool organic farmer with happy cows, buy a cow off him each year or so, have it cut up and packaged into all the various pieces, put them in a freezer in my basement, and then use that beef for cooking for my family throughout the next year. I like the idea of really knowing where my food came from.

The six things I could never do without

my family (I'm very close with my older brother, who lives here in SF, too)
my friends
NPR
rice
believing in my daily work
learning new things each day

I spend a lot of time thinking about

medical schools. and med school interviews. It's such a stressful process, but I'm pretty psyched that I've gotten six interviews so far!

On a typical Friday night I am

Recovering from a week of Kindergarten craziness, usually by relaxing at home, reading, watching movies with friends, cooking, and having a glass of wine. I am on a zinfandel kick now. Just finished my malbec kick. hehe

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I'm kind of gluten-intolerant, so I can't eat much bread, pasta, cookies, etc. But potatoes, rice including rice noodles, and corn including tortillas and tortilla chips are okay!
