My self-summary
It's just not possible to summarize oneself in a paragraph, but here are some random things to know about me.
*I'm a calm extrovert.
*I still talk to my best friend from high school 3 to 4 times a week. I miss the time when it was three times a day.
*I've lived in San Francisco for my entire adult life.
*I just learned to like brussel sprouts. Hazel nut oil is apparently all that it took.
*Sometimes I avidly pretend that I know what I'm talking about to the point I even believe myself. My friends love to point this out and remind me of the ridiculous things I've stuck to with absolutely zero proof. You should try it. It's fun.
*I have really thick hair that takes a lot of taming.
*I LOVE to go to the movies. I get all the snacks and try my best to make the previews.
*Teaching is the only thing I've ever wanted to do.
*I exercise because it makes me feel good. Not so I can brag about it. This is a huge turn off for me.
*I read US Weekly and the New Yorker.
*I spend a lot of time laughing, playing, and enjoying the day to day.
*I'm currently addicted to The West Wing.
*I wake up happy.
*I wish I drank whiskey, but wine is more my speed.
*Milk chocolate seems pointless to me.
*My passport is a bit dusty, but I hope to give it some attention soon. Italy!
*I have a four year old son that spends about half his time with his dad. He's the best.
What I’m doing with my life
I teach sixth grade English and history. Usually when people hear this, they look at me like I'm completely insane. I genuinely enjoy the age. I'm lucky to work with interesting and intelligent teachers that engage in thoughtful dialogue about education and I often find myself wishing that my middle school experience had been more like the one we're providing. That said, there are days when I don't want to read 40 essays about Alexander the Great or some pretty terrible dystopian fiction.
I’m really good at
Making and keeping friends
Talking you through a tough moment
Making really delicious chocolate chip cookies
The first things people usually notice about me
No idea. That I'm kind of tall? That I have blue eyes?
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Favorite authors include: Jonathan Safran Foer, Anne Lammot, Jennifer Egan, Anne Patchet. Wish I had more time to read.

Movies - These are the ones I'll stop to watch - You Can Count on Me, Zoolander, Airplane, Legally Blonde, Pretty Woman, The American President, The Princess Bride, Kissing Jessica Stein.
Then there are the movies that I love but can't watch on a whim - Philadelphia, American Beauty, Schindler's List, Fresh.

TV - Homeland, Newsroom, The Wire, The Killing, So You Think You Can Dance, Parenthood and a few other guilty pleasures that I won't list here. I don't watch a ton of tv, but every now and then it's a simple way to unwind.

Radio - This American Life - I often walk to work and get lost in the stories.

Music: Lately, a lot of James Brown - my son is obsessed. Adele, Pink, Beck, Coldplay, Emmy Lou Harris, Lucinda Williams, John Legend, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Van Morrison, Led Zeppelin, Feist, GillianWelch (these are some of my current pandora stations - did you know you can have Pandora without the ads for just $4 a month)! Oh, and I like to listen to pop radio. I just do!

Food: Mexican, Thai, and Indian are some of my favorites. Generally, I just like food. If I'm really wanting to treat myself, I go to Tartine for fresh bread.
The six things I could never do without
1. Connecting with friends and family. Laughing, listening, walking, whatever.
2. Coffee!
3. Dinner - I don't understand those people that can just skip dinner. Best meal of the day! If you talk about exercising a lot and don't eat dinner, well it's going to be a tough road for us.
4. Music - It can change a mood like nothing else.
5. Walking - I walk everywhere!
6. And of course, most of all I couldn't imagine a world without my son. He keeps me busy laughing and enjoying the little things that we forget about when we get big. Cliche, but true.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Where I put my keys and sunglasses.
How to raise my son so that he'll become a really good man.
My lesson plans for the next day.
On a typical Friday night I am
Dinner or drinks with friends or a night at home with my son, followed by some time with my DVR catching up on those shows listed above.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
This is more personal than private. I've been divorced for over two years and separated for longer. Luckily, my ex is a good partner in parenting. I get lots of great time with my son and also time to be me.
