Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
I'm a work in progress. So is this profile.
I try to live my life deeply and well. I want to understand the
world around me, to try new things, and to see where life will take
me. And that's best done in good company.
I'm an INTP, which means that I often keep to myself, and that I
think too much. But I'm looking for good conversations, and people
who can enrich the journey and remind me to have some fun along the
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I'm currently working on a Ph.D. in Geography at CU Boulder,
looking at the history of the American West, and how it's presented
to visitors. Somehow, that doesn't give me as much chance to get
out and enjoy Colorado as I'd like to. But when I do, I hike and
ski, do a little climbing, and generally look for roads I haven't
Research and teaching--and inevitable procrastination--keep me
busy, but I'm also a fan of good stories, good music, tasty food,
and the occasional nip of decent whiskey.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Pacing back and forth as I distract myself.
Keeping a desk that looks like a mess to everyone else but makes
sense to me.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food

I love Neal Stephenson and Lois McMaster Bujold, both for their
engaging plots and their snarky, witty language. Ender's Game,
though not so much its sequels. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle
Maintenance. Least Heat-Moon's Blue Highways. The poetry of A River
Runs Through It. And (sigh) whatever I'm *supposed* to be
reading--from time to time I'll remember why I enjoy it!
I follow Questionable Content, Girl Genius, Gunnerkrigg Court, and
Hark a Vagrant, though that's not updating as much anymore.
I don't watch all that much TV, but I loved Firefly, am on-again,
off-again with Doctor Who, and keep meaning to catch up on Breaking
Bad and Battlestar Galactica. I watch old Daria episodes, and
wonder how something so hilarious could be so corporate. And then
MST3k, RiffTrax, and cheesy online review shows.
I listen to a lot of folk and bluegrass, but also smatterings of
indie, synth-pop, and whatever the Magnetic Fields qualify as. I'm
a regular contra dancer, and keep meaning to learn to play
something one of these days.
I love ethnic food--thai, indian, ethiopian, and good green chile.
Spicy food is a good thing.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
Thinking too much.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Just about everything. My research is on how we understand places,
and I hope that one of these days I'll spend more time in the field
than in the office. But I keep distracting myself with politics,
random articles on Wikipedia and TvTropes, whatever has come across
the internet recently, and bits and pieces of Boulder that I've
never noticed before.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Probably at one of the Denver or Boulder contra dances--it's a
great way to be active, and it's introduced me to some good
friends. And the music is amazing.
Otherwise, hanging out with friends, or perhaps at a movie.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I own a kilt, and wear it in public every once in a while.
