I am outgoing, creative, and self-aware.
My Self-Summary
Rabble-rousing intellectual. Documentary maker, cyclist, crafty
cook. Playful and serious. Looking for a bright and engaged
conversationalist, someone who is passionately engaged in their
work, above all honest, and likes to get physical.
What I’m doing with my life
Working full time at a new public radio station with a social
justice mission and an experimental bent. I make story pieces for
the air and mentor the uninitiated on how to make radio. My other
big preoccupation is riding and occasionally racing bikes, although
I'm just getting back into racing and training after a year of
being injured. I really enjoy track racing, and I'm planning to try
some cyclocross this fall.
I’m really good at
Listening.
The first things people usually notice about me
Big smile, big personality. Pretty frank and up-front, sharp and
funny.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
Books/Authors: Coast of Chicago by Stuart Dybek, all non-fiction by
George Orwell, collected essays of John Berger, On Photography by
Susan Sontag, Beloved by Toni Morrison, Commetbus, Art Spiegelman,
anything illustrated by Dave McKean. I always look for Malcolm
Gladwell's pieces in the New Yorker and Erroll Morris' pieces in
the NY Times.
Music: Any Tropicalia but especially Os Mutantes and Caetano
Veloso, Elvis Costello (swoon), the Jayhawks, Dirty Projectors,
David Byrne & Brian Eno, Daniel Johnston, Black Forrest/Black
Sea, Mudboy, Deertick, Death Vessell, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Etta
James, Flashpapr, Grizzly Bear, Joanna Newsome, Johnny Cash, Laurie
Anderson, Lungfish, Ted Leo, The Mountain Goats, Nat Baldwin,
Sleater-Kinney, Vic Chestnutt...too many to name, really.
Food: sushi, Indian, Thai, any good vegetarian.
Movies (& ok TV): Herzog (My Best Fiend, Woodcarver Steiner,
Nosferatu, more), the Wire, Lost, True Blood, 2046 by Wong Kar Wai,
Apocalypse Now, Erroll Morris, er, X-Men (yeah), Project Runway,
Walk the Line, This American Life, CHRIS MARKER (Sans Soleil),
Vertigo. Too many to remember here.
The six things I could never do without
Collard greens, my bike(s), a transistor radio, sunshine, friends,
intellectual stimulation.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
I'm endlessly curious about people so I guess I spend a lot of time
thinking about the people in my life and what makes them
tick.
I think about my work, even when I'm not working on it. Good? Bad?
Maybe just part of my process.
I dunno...this is kind of a funny question. I need to think about
it some more.
On a typical Friday night I am
Hanging out at a backyard barbecue, biking around, checking out a
show somewhere, or recovering from the week.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit here
I've had a rough year. Between getting hit by a car last June,
suffering a bad break up and dealing with illness in my family,
I've had a lot to contend with. Generally I'm a pretty strong
person, but all of these things have really tested that mental
strength. I think I'm doing pretty well now though, and that maybe
I've come out the other side.
You should message me if
You are an intellectually curious, creative, don't take yourself
too seriously, no bs kind of guy. If you're emotionally open. If
you're intrigued by what you read. If you want to ride around town,
go explore some abandoned train bridges or sit on the stoop and
drink gin and tonic out of a mason jar. Tall and bearded are always
a plus!
NOTE: I'd prefer if you didn't IM me, unless we've already talked
or have some kind of QuickMatch 4/5 stars thing going on. I'm just
usually not in the mood to make small talk via instant messenger
and I think it's a really sub-par form of communication to be
reserved for slow days at the office.
