My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
[this profile is six months and 2,000 miles out of date; I will update sometime when it's not 3am]

Two parts geek, one part hipster wannabe, one part stoic, one part mathematician, a splash of positivism, a dash of introversion, add cynicism to taste. Serve with sarcasm and, optionally, tequila.

I'm shy but amicable, easy-going but respectful, intelligent but unassuming, and cautious but calming.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I'm currently working as a support engineer for a local web hosting company. After a few sweet months of being a daywalker, I've said my goodbyes to the sun and am back on the night shift. That's okay though. Cohabitation with a giant nuclear cancer-and-vitamin-D sky-ball is actually pretty weird after you stop taking it for granted.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Maintaining a healthy sense of perspective. I love hearing different philosophies and being challenged to reconsider my values and beliefs. Knowing that there's more to my world than what I'm presently experiencing is what keeps me stable through hard times and allows me to laugh at myself. This is important in case I'm ever stuck with nobody else at whom to laugh.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I'm a very reserved person, so please don't be offended if I don't open up right when you expect me to. I don't always say much, but I do make an excellent listener to anyone who just wants to talk. I do try to be friendly and I usually find myself on good terms with anyone willing to tolerate me. I'm pretty hard to offend, so don't be afraid to say what's on your mind!
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food

I consume very little in the way of television and movies, though I'm currently fond of Archer, Community, and The Daily Show, and my favorite films are Tron, In Bruges, and The Blues Brothers.

I listen to a lot of indie rock/pop. Names you may have heard of include The Killers, Vampire Weekend, and The Dresden Dolls. Lesser-known favorites include Lucky Soul, Los Campesinos!, Mew, and Stars. Or just see and excuse the middle-school username.

In literature, I'm drawn to works of detective fiction, fantasy adventure, and mathematical or computer-scientific expatiation. Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, H.G. Wells, Neal Stephenson, and Dashiell Hammett are some of my favorites. I don't get as much time as I'd like to read books cover-to-cover, but I'm still always looking for suggestions.

I also read a lot of webcomics, which are doing lots of interesting things with an art form that's been largely regressive for decades. Scary Go Round, Wondermark, Broodhollow, Dinosaur Comics, and Buttersafe are just a few of the more generally excellent ones.

Also, Donkey Kong Country 2, Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Diablo II are the best video games ever made. You don't even know.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
Tacos: so easy, so healthful, so delicious.
Sad songs that sound like happy songs.
Little shivers down my spine - the kind you get when it's autumn and you realize you're going to need a heavier jacket soon.
Getting lost.
Public key cryptography.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Optimization problems. Spreadsheets. How strange of a food product cheese is. Whether I'm going to have the willpower to get to bed at a reasonable hour tonight (outlook not so good). Why the one pair of navy pants I have is never clean at the same time as a shirt that goes with it. What my cat wants. Whether I'm buying the wrong kind of light bulb. Kyriarchy. Gödel's Incompleteness Theorem. Yes, Carl, I can hear you, seriously, what do you want? I just fed you.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
If I'm feeling social, I'm playing video or board games. My favorite game for tabletop right now is Puzzle Strike, but really I'm happy with anything that isn't yet another round of Catan (good game, but I've played it enough for one lifetime).

If I'm feeling creative, I'll be practicing with my ukulele - surely the sexiest of all instruments. I don't have any formal musical training but that doesn't stop me from pretending I can sing cheesy pop songs.

If I'm feeling outdoorsy, I'll ride my bicycle around town. Saint Louis has quite a few trails and green spaces and I've only explored a fraction of them, so I'm making an effort to spend more time in my local parks.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
The word "expatiation" is not actually part of my working vocabulary. I found it in a thesaurus while writing this profile. It's a good word, though. Maybe we can bring it back.
