I am a feminist, radical, and domestic.

My Self-Summary

I'm an ardent radical leftist feminist academic, who happens to love high-heel shoes, and martha stewart. For me, working for radical structural change doesn't have to mean forgoing fashion or a healthy appreciation of crafting and the kitchen.

I love school, and am currently in my 7th year of higher education (year one of my PhD program). I believe tremendously in the ability for education (with a radical pedagogical approach) to transform the world. I make great effort to ensure that my teaching and research are not isolated to "the ivory tower." I believe education can be community-based and empowering.

I love my cat. I grew up with cats and dogs, but at this point in my life, a cat is about as much responsibility as I can handle.

I play music, and have been in several bands since high school. I'm not particularly talented when it comes to playing instruments, but I have a lot of fun with it.

So, okay, we have my politics covered, my inner domestic goddess, my cat, music.....Yep, I think that's the important stuff. Oh, I am also really into health and fitness. I sort of ruin all that when I do my vegan baking, but aside from that I am very devoted to running or yoga every day and eating a very healthy vegan diet (again, minus the desserts!).

What I’m doing with my life

After six happy years getting my BA and MA in Culture and Communication in Chicago, I am now working towards my PhD at the University of Minnesota. I teach with an effort to inspire young minds into radical, anti-racist, sex-positive, pro-labor, anti-homophobic, anti-transphobic, feminist little revolutionaries. I take classes and do research that will hopefully lead to some positive social change (and then to radical structural change). Someday I will be that super-cool radical professor who helps all the radical student groups organize protests and changes minds and maybe lives. Fingers-crossed! : )

I’m really good at

Baking vegan things. Keeping a tidy home. Teaching. Researching/Writing. Writing cute little songs on my guitar that talk about love and how much capitalism sucks, usually simultaneously.

The first things people usually notice about me

Depending on the season, my tattoos. I've been told my eyes are something to be noticed. Oh, and that I'm just barely 5' tall.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

BOOKS
I spend most of my time reading theory and scholarly articles, so here's a list of some of my favorite intellectuals: Judith Butler, Gayatri Spivak, Judith Halberstam, Antonio Gramsci, Cathy Cohen, Susan Stryker, Jaspir K. Puar, Paulo Freire, bell hooks, Marx (w/ critique of course), Foucault (ditto), Emma Goldman, David Harvey, Stephen Duncombe.

MOVIES
hard to choose, but these usually make the cut: Stranger Than Fiction, Annie Hall, Love Actually, Amelie, Lost In Translation, Persepolis, The Departed, But I'm A Cheerleader....

MUSIC
i'm not going to name-drop bands. i like punk and folk-punk and indie rock and folk and some dancey stuff. i promise my taste is impeccable.

FOOD
the vegan kind.

The six things I could never do without

1. mom
2. friends
3. education
4. radical activism&organizing (at least until we reach utopia, anyway)
5. love&sex
6. exercise

I spend a lot of time thinking about

how to build a revolutionary movement. how to destabalize the gender binary. how to slowly transform my wardrobe into one that is more reflective of bettie page's closet. sex.

On a typical Friday night I am

I am quite a homebody, so when I have someone to stay in with, staying in is my preferred activity (with movies, food, and canoodling). However, if a party is full of good people, I am happy to attend. I also like going to see movies and the occasional show.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

My heart was absolutely destroyed after my last breakup. I am shocked I am creating a profile on this, but I am really trying to convince myself that I am capable of moving on. (eek! how's that for something to scare you away?)

You should message me if

you are politically radical. dedicated to social justice. covered in tattoos. tall and/or big-boned. silly. fond of cats. also, someone who will eat and appreciate my vegan baked goods.
