I am smart, funny, and kind.

My Self-Summary

I'm starting a new chapter in my life.

I've generally followed my own path. I started a business in 1978. Though it has evolved over the years, I've generally stayed near the top of my field professionally. I've won regional and national awards, founded a non-profit (its still going strong 22 years later), and survived where most haven't. Raised two great boys, mostly by myself.

I can be a paradoxical guy--I don't believe in materialism, but I sell things. I'm very nice and patient, but can get pissed off at assholes. I'm concerned with morality, act like I believe in Karma, quote Jesus (occasionally), but am agnostic. I'm generous yet frugal, fortunate yet complain, humble yet proud.

I think all the questions on this site do a good job pointing out some of my unique qualities, tho' I haven't figured out yet if anyone will ever really see/accurately analyze my answers. And I'm confused about being 80% friends/10% enemies with the same person.

Its hard to say exactly what I'm looking for as everyone is unique. If you think the Iraq war is a good idea, or that the Earth is 5000 years old, those would probably be deal killers. Integrity and an open mind are important, as is the desire to have good conversations. This isn't to say I don't have my shallow points--I'm probably more of a sucker for high heels, nail polish, and a pretty face than the average guy.

At times I've gotten into most sports, now I'm pretty much down to the NBA playoffs. I like going for walks, especially out of my neighborhood. I think about traveling to far off lands, but haven't recently. I have a dry sense of humor.

What I’m doing with my life

Recreating my relationship with my sons as they become adults. Reinventing my business to survive the recession.

I’m really good at

Conversations.
Efficiency.
Organization.
Economics.
Visual assessment.

The first things people usually notice about me

I look younger than I am. My smile and voice.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I like to read: two daily newspapers, the Nation weekly, the New Yorker often, and a variety of books including everything by Elmore Leonard, Walter Mosely, Alan Moore and R. Crumb. On my night table is the Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan which I've been half-way through for about a year. I read many of the classics as a child, and have tremendous respect for Dosteyevski, Tolstoy, Vonnegut and Twain, among others. I don't read as much serious stuff as I guess I should...

I've always loved movies, but now pretty much go to "art" (indy?) films because most Hollywood stuff is crap (recently enjoyed Julie & Julia and Departures). My favorite directors are Jim Jarmusch and Pedro Almodovar. Currently getting into Madmen and Nurse Jackie on TV.

I especially like rock and jazz music--everything from the Ramones to Ellington, the Stones to Joni Mitchell, the Fish Fry and American Roots on NPR. Nothing against any music--can also get into Hank Williams, Burning Spear, Wu Tang, King Sunny Ade, zydeco, etc.

I'm trying to eat more organic/natural/local. I've been growing herbs, raspberries, cukes and tomatoes this summer. Love Fervere bread, Christopher Elbow chocolates, good Margaritas, red wine, fresh beer, etc.

The six things I could never do without

Good food, especially dumplings and pasta.
Good movies.
Good music, especially live.
A smart woman in a short dress (from a Jimmy Buffet song).
Art.
Good conversation.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

What's so controversial about free health care for Americans.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I waste a lot of time looking at personal ads.

You should message me if

You like in depth conversations.
