My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
"Our desire to be free has got to manifest itself in everything we are and do."
--Assata Shakur

Recently out of a relationship, and just looking to enjoy myself at the moment. ;)

I adore dogs, Rottweilers in particular.

I grew up in the woods of rural, anglo Quebec.

It turns me off when a man is into video games and/or has a frequent need to show me something on youtube. :D

I want to live in the Caribbean and drink coconut everyday. Or live in a log cabin here (winter is more bearable in the country).

My favourite smell in the world is the smell of burning wood.

I am not into cars really, but I find old pick-up trucks remarkably sexy.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I organize and promote events about issues like systemic violence against indigenous communities in Canada (women in particular) and the environment, reproductive justice, sexual assault awareness, international solidarity (ie with places that our government is actively participating in destroying, such as occupied Palestine) and queer and trans rights. Also: workshops, peer counselling services, the occasional party, marches, the occasional direct action, etc, etc. At times I deal with the media, and it's an insane amount of work, but I mostly love my job and feel blessed to get paid to do feminist social justice work that is meaningful to me.

I've also recently finished a Creative Writing Masters program. It was bullshit. :) I really hate being in school, and am incredibly happy to be finished. I plan on trying to get a job teaching at a CEGEP in the next year or so.

I used to do a good amount of freelance independent journalism also but am now trying to focus on my creative writing projects...I'm slowly working on a collection of creative/political/sexual fiction, personal essays and vignettes. And a few poems.

Politically, I am more interested in noticing who is being heard, who is not, understanding why, and then figuring out how to balance out how skewed it is than in telling myself that there are only two sides to a thing, and that they are in any way equal or equally deserving of attention. I am not the kind that is turned on by a major difference in political beliefs. While I'd like to be on the same page politically as any potential lover/partner, I would prefer someone whose involvements do not overlap in every way with mine.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Communicating, telling stories, finding surprising ways to describe things, being really really honest, showing affection, making others feel comfortable, dancing like mad, observing people closely, improvising food, coming up with t-shirt slogans and band names, traveling light, a few other things. Oh, and laughing at almost everything you say. :D Don't let it make you insecure. The universe is a funny fucking place.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
The glowing, glimmering eye contact?
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food

Books: Freedom (Jonathan Franzen), The Golden Notebook (Doris Lessing), The Bone People (Keri Hulme), The Toughest Indian in the World (Sherman Alexie), The God of Small Things (Arundhati Roy), Skinny Legs and All (Tom Robbins), The Temple of my Familiar (Alice Walker), Ines of My Soul (Isabel Allende)....I like fiction that enhances my understanding of real-life political/personal struggles.

Movies: She's Gotta Have It, Wild At Heart, Salaam Bombay!, Monsoon Wedding, Mississippi Masala, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Annie Hall, Purple Rain, Amores Perros, Dirty Dancing, No Country for Old Men, The Outsiders, Labyrinth, Volver, The Neverending Story, The Wrestler, My Own Private Idaho, The Karate Kid, Shortbus, Mermaids, Orlando, Mo' Better Blues, Biutiful, Pina....I like Spike Lee, Woody Allen, Akira Kurosawa, Pedro Almodóvar, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Darren Aronofsky. I am completely in love with the films of Mira Nair.

I also love the comedy of Bill Hicks.

TV: Shameless, Louis, Curb your Enthusiasm, Breaking Bad, Dexter, Parks and Recreation, Men of a Certain Age, Enlightened, Battlestar Galactica, Freaks and Geeks, Six Feet Under, Perfect Strangers, The Wire, Weeds, Nurse Jackie, The Sopranos, and a few guiltier pleasures I won't name here. I feel we're living in a time when the best and worst TV co-exist. In any case, I don't want to be in a relationship where TV watching takes up too much romantic space. There are much better things to be doing with the one you love, if you get my drift.

Music: Tarrus Riley, Talib Kweli, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Sinead O'Connor, Joan Armatrading, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Billie Holiday, Nick Drake, Neko Case, Prince, Tupac Shakur, Vybz Kartel, Little Dragon, Sean Paul, Rihanna, Beyonce, Ayo, Aaliyah, Heart, David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Erykah Badu, Mos Def, Nina Simone, M.I.A., Marvin Gaye, Morcheeba, Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys, Calle 13, Rage Against the Machine, Digable Planets, Fleetwood Mac, Janis Joplin, Jeff Buckley, Missy Elliott, Ce'cile, Sublime, En Vogue, Edith Piaf, Sade...Soul, Reggae, Dancehall, R&B, Hip Hop, Soca, Chutney, Blues, Folk, New Jack Swing. I hate techno.

Food: Black beans, brown rice, avocado, lime, salsa, yoghurt. Mmm. Eggs. Hummus. Corn tortillas. Sweet Potato. Kale. Shrimp. Garlic. Cayenne. Lemon. Coconut. Almonds. Cashews. Ginger. Broccoli. Salmon. Mushrooms and onions atop a good burger. Curry. Rice, squash. Generally: Indian, Mexican, improvised, spicy. Really trying not to eat much wheat, dairy, sugar, alcohol, or coffee these days. It just generally feels better. But I make exceptions at the right times.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
Fire; love in all its forms; sex; creative power and possibility; change; my contact lenses.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
How to best spend a life...how to do myself justice....how to motivate myself and others simultaneously....being healthy...bridging the gap between art and activism....putting myself in environments where a love of people comes naturally...countering stereotypes and defying absolutes....political correctness and how politically oppressive it can be....how certainty is a colonial construct .... sex ..... love .... dogs ... relationships ... etc.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Having dinner at a friend's house, or dancing, or out at some political/artistic event. Or at a house party, or relaxing with a movie or TV 'cause I'm exhausted. Or just sitting there, unable to focus, thinking something sexual. Depends.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I'm an open book...I think that's pretty private.

If you have a sense of humour, and see the divine comedy that is always at play all around us. If you love and respect women. If you are honest.
