My self-summary Propose an edit
Last update: August 25th
I'm a goofy New Englander who likes intelligent thought, beer, and
persons. I thrive on conversation and laughter, even if it means
I'm the one doing most of both. I flit between science and
psychology, which is a conundrum seeing as how I have a degree in
physics and a greater talent for the latter. But really, I'm just
trying to find my way in life while enjoying as much of it as I
can. I also try to be as honest as I can; it's something I really
have a hard time with in other people so I figure I should live up
to my own standards.
I love board games like Risk and Settlers of Catan - things with
strategy that you can still play after a few beers. I also love
pen-and-paper roleplaying games of all kinds, though I admit I
haven't gotten to play much in the past year. Going out to eat is a
favorite pastime of mine. I'm also fond of road trips, and I curse
the current gas prices for spoiling my fun.
What I'm doing with my life Propose an edit
What am I doing with my life? I'm living it. I work at Texas
A&M at the particle accelerator, the latest in a line of
technical but varied careers. Hopefully I'll be making the move to
grad school in the next year or two.
As for the non-work side of things, I'm: slowly learning French and
Russian, VERY slowly learning to play guitar, writing a book,
fleshing out a Dungeons & Dragons campaign world, trying to get
better at cooking, going to the gym, and generally not getting
enough sleep.
I'm really good at Propose an edit
Laughing, listening, giving advice, and making inappropriate
comments are my main skills. I also write fairly well, and my
cooking isn't bad, either. I probably have other skills as well.
The first thing(s) people usually notice about me Propose an edit
My laugh and possibly my hat, should I choose to wear one. I'm a
bit loud, and I can be very talkative when I'm comfortable with my
situation (and feel the need to fill the empty space with
vibration). I also have the habit of not sitting down, or sitting
down on the floor as opposed to in a chair. "No, I'm fine thanks.
No, I don't have a good reason."
My favorite books, movies, music, and food Propose an edit
WAY too much stuff can be shoved into this section, so this will be
horribly abbreviated.
Books: Norwegian Wood (and most other Murakami pieces), The
Fountainhead, Brave New World, Illusions, Ender's Game. I very
rarely dislike something I read and am open to suggestions. I'm
currently working on Atlas Shrugged, a collection of Lovecraft
stories, and Frida.
Movies: The Princess Bride, Love Actually, all things Monty Python,
Starship Troopers, V for Vendetta, Mel Brooks' History of the World
part 1 (and just about everything else Mel Brooks has done), Eat
Drink Man Woman, Shrek, What Dreams May Come, Eternal Sunshine of
the Spotless Mind, Serenity, The Dark Knight, Juno. I just like
movies in general, although horror movies - the ones that are
gruesome and disgusting just for the sake of being gruesome and
disgusting - are not appealing to me.
TV Shows: CSI, Carnivale, Bones, Coupling, Battlestar Galactica,
Star Trek: TNG, Stargate: SG-1, Heroes, Scrubs, Firefly.
Music: The Decemberists, The Good Life, Simon & Garfunkel, Eve
6, Harvey Danger, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Meatloaf, Deathcab For
Cutie, Panic! at the Disco, Dragonforce, Ra, Velvet Revolver,
Queensryche. I'll put up with anything that's not rap basically,
especially if it's good driving music.
Food: Sushi, Pizza, Lobster, Chinese, gyros, seafood and clam
chowder. I really love food and am not ashamed to call myself a
glutton.
The six things I could never do without Propose an edit
1. The love of good friends. I'd say family as well, but I think
real friends mean a lot more than someone who claims to love you
because gee golly you're my cousin and aren't family members
supposed to love each other for some reason even though we can't
stand each other? Hmmm...I think I just said something about my
family.
2. My mind. 3. People in general, without which I would be lacking
an infinite source of inspiration and entertainment. 4. My
computer. 5. Books. 6. Sex.
I spend a lot of time thinking about Propose an edit
... how our political system got filled with crooks and scoundrels
... where terrorism came from ... how we manage to play with
numbers and symbols and then claim we can know how the universe was
right after the big bang ... how I can be so annoyed by someone yet
have a good friend tell me how wonderful that same person is ...
how relationships between very compatible, very similar people fall
apart with ease yet total opposites can't tear themselves away from
each other even when they want to ... why I got a physics degree
instead of a psychology or english or engineering degree ... why
Texas weather is so bizarre ... whether the mechanism for brain
function is quantum mechanical or simply beyond the scope of
science ... why I'm so convinced getting a phd is so difficult
despite how many idiotic grad students I've met ... why chemistry
is so much more lucrative than physics despite the fact that
chemistry is entirely physics ... what energy really is ...
On a typical Friday night I am Propose an edit
My atypical work schedule means the idea of a "Friday night"
happens on varying days of the week. On days when I'm not working,
I like to spend time playing board games or watching TV/movies with
friends over good food and a beer or rum and coke. But when friends
are not easily accessible I fall back on reading, writing, and
video games (World of Warcraft, Mariokart Wii, and soon Warhammer
Online).
The most private thing I'm willing to admit here Propose an edit
I'm convinced I have a minor form of OCD that forces me to buy TV
shows on DVD so I don't have to wait until the next week to find
out what happens next. I also have a fetish for Russian culture and
accents; I'm still not sure why.
You should message me if Propose an edit
...if you'd like to get a drink, get some food, watch a movie, play
a board game, or start an rpg. I also prefer meeting in person
after talking once or twice online, just because people are far
more interesting when body language and inflection come into play.
