I am eccentric, honest, and a geek.

My Self-Summary

Hi, I'm Josh (it's a boring name compared to some, but it's the one I've got). I'm a graduate student in molecular biology at ASU. Science geek. Gamer geek. Anime geek. Sci-fi geek. I would like to be a computer geek but can't find the time to learn to code. I love to argue and discuss things (philosophy, politics, religion, books, etc), especially over beer or alternative alcoholic beverage of choice. I read a lot. I'm a huge Heinlein fan, but will read almost any sci-fi, fantasy, or generally interesting looking book. I have recently been learning to knit, weave, and do other sorts of craft-y things. I am interested in lots of "home-made" or "made-from-scratch" things. I enjoy cooking, especially cooking for other people who appreciate it. I've been home brewing beer, wine, and meade. I've tried my hand at home made vinager and pickles (didn't work so well). Oh, and I make home made cheese on occasion. I'm really bad at initiating interpersonal communication in person (I'm very shy) so I figured this might be a good way to meet people with common interests on a sort of neutral territory. I have a lot of crazy/odd ideas about the way the world works or should work, and I tend to expound upon them to anyone who will listen. Religiously speaking I'm a Discordian. If you don't know what that is, google it or better yet, ask me.

What I’m doing with my life

I'm in grad school here working on a PhD in molecular biology. Doing research and whatnot. Reading. Thinking. Attempting to describe myself to a webpage. Learning to brew alcohol in my spare time. I recently exited a long-ish relationship and am still sort of sorting through the associated pieces of my life.

I’m really good at

Biology, I'm trained in it after all. I'm good at seeing connections that aren't apparent, explaining complex things in an understandable-if-not-simple manner, and understanding things when they're explained to me.

The first things people usually notice about me

These days it seems to be my hair, which is apparently curly. This may change if I get it cut short again.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

(a) Anything by Heinlein, the Miles Vorkosigan series, the sword of truth series, LOTR, Dune, Diskworld, Snowcrash, the lensman series, Harry Potter, the Illuminatus trilogy, Surely you're joking Mr. Feynman, and many more.

(b) LOTR, Babylon 5, Heroes, BSG, Evangelion, Being John Malkovich, Spirited Away (or any Miazaki movie), Firefly, etc.

(c) jpop and celtic folk music, especially when combined. I'm also getting in to Filk and Nerdcore Hiphop

(d) Fried tofu, tempura, and Asian/Indian foods in general.

The six things I could never do without

Books, plumbing, air-conditioning, my opposable thumbs, coffee, and good food. I could live without the internet, I would just be very sad.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

My personal moral and political philosophy

On a typical Friday night I am

Role playing. I game on friday nights.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I'm a bit of a slob

You should message me if

You want to get to know me better, have a question, hate my guts, or are drunk and want to email someone.
