My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
First and foremost, I consider myself a creative type. I'm not overly materialistic; most of my passions are along more artistic/literary/generally esoteric lines. My main passion is writing. I'm currently working on a novel and several short stories. I also occasionally write non-fiction articles and music reviews. I also have a deep appreciation for visual art and music, though I have virtually no skills in these areas myself. Academically, I've studied philosophy, linguistics, and literary theory, which I'm hoping to transfer into a graduate degree in cognitive science (specifically cognitive linguistics). I have a casual fascination with anything involving the hard sciences (in particular theoretical physics and neuroscience), mathematics, and psychology. I'd would absolutely love to meet new people with expertise in these fields, so if you've studied anything like that feel free to message me!

Fun fact: I worked as an assistant on the project that recently outed J.K. Rowling's pseudonym, albeit in a very minor role.

I'm looking to travel more. I've been to the U.K., France, Austria and Denmark on academic research grants, but of course I'd love to see even more.

I can find something interesting in most people, provided they have not been entirely consumed by demagogue-ery.

I have lines from poems by Shelley and Eliot tattooed on both arms.

I possess a magic backpack that seems to always contain a particular book that will be useful in any given situation.

I'm very good at making lists.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Following some time off after graduating with my Bachelor's, I'll be starting grad school next year, hopefully. Right now I'm working for an education start-up and doing some freelance writing.

I'm interested in theories of the mind and how consciousness relates to the human capacity and usage of language. At the same time I'm also trying to work on my fiction writing. I tend towards literary/postmodern/magic realism/dirty realism genres. I also occasionally write poetry of dubious quality.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
My greatest skills would probably be writing (both creative and academic), as well as working through abstract concepts and such (very applicable, I know).

Though poetry is less my thing than fiction writing, I think I'm particularly good at writing sonnets. If you're interested, message me and I'll write you one based on stuff in your profile.

I can take most any philosophical or theoretical concept, no matter how abstract, and weave it into a fictional story. Whether or not such stories are good is another matter entirely.

I've also been told I have a great sense of direction (though, conversely, I'm terrible at remembering the names of streets or towns).
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Well, it used to be my long hair, but I've recently had that cut (I donated the excess to Locks of Love, in case you were wondering). If I'm wearing a t-shirt people might notice my tattoos. If not, perhaps the scorpion necklace I bought at a voodoo store in New Orleans.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Help your potential matches find common interests.
Books--I generally like contemporary postmodern fiction, as well as older stuff that holds up. Basically anything that has something profound or philosophical to say.

Favorite fiction writers include (in no particular order) William Faulkner, Jorge Luis Borges, Thomas Pynchon, Vladimir Nabokov, Cormac McCarthy, Don Delilo, William S. Burroughs, Jack Kerouac, Henry Miller, Virginia Woolf, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Saul Bellow, David Foster Wallace, Donald Barthelme, Thomas Mann, Joseph Heller, Dave Eggers, Michael Chabon, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Joseph Conrad, Joyce Carol Oates, Angela Carter, Raymond Carver, Margaret Atwood, and so on.

Favorite poets include (again, in no particular order) Wallace Stevens, William Butler Yeats, John Donne, Philip Larkin, T.S. Eliot, Percy Bisshe Shelley, Hart Crane, Elizabeth Bishop, John Keats, Theodore Roethke, Charles Simic, (and, of course, Shakespeare).

Movies--I'd watch most things, except for the inexcusably stupid (though I do like some dumber comedies for relaxtion purposes). I'm fond of the works of David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Stanley Kubrick, Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, alien), etc.

I haven't been watching much TV recently, with the exception of Breaking Bad.

Music--I like a very wide variety of stuff. My iTunes range from Bach to death metal.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
Books, music, ideas, natural beauty, science, human progress
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
The mind, the brain, language, phenomenology, Wittgenstein, literature, all of the unrecognized filthy puns in Shakespeare, when the next meteor shower is going to be, whether humans will colonize another planet in my lifetime.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Usually catching up on some reading, but I do go out and do something fun if I have other people to go with.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
When I was in junior high I wrote a prolonged Harry Potter/Dragonball Z crossover fanfic.
You should message me if
Offer a few tips to help matches win you over.
I would particularly like to hear from people who have academic expertise in something interesting, who have unique, creative gifts, who are fellow writers, or who know of fun things esoteric-minded people can do on a Friday night. But really, if you have any kind of unique quirk (which is most people, I've found), I'd love to hear from you.
