My self-summary
A friend of mine summed up this simple life philosophy: Better to err on the side of saying yes than saying no. This can apply to all areas-- and we'll sleep when we're dead, right? Spontaneous trip? Camping, road trip, jump online and book some tickets... or just meet up for drink, or a wandering stroll through the city? Having grown up in a pretty boring small town, I love living in an urban cultural center (yet such a chill, laid-back one!) and like to take advantage of all it has to offer.

I'm a musician, and I'm down to check out pretty much any kind of show. And I don't just mean varied genres of guitar rock, electronica, or jazz, though I can get into any of these. I've been lucky enough to be exposed to music from lots of different cultures (more on some below), and my ears are open to the whole range of organized sounds.

Having lots of friends in the arts means I like checking out other kinds, whether performances like dance, theater, circus; or galleries, poetry readings, etc. And, like most people, I consider myself pretty smart ;-) so I'll take any opportunity to learn something and discuss about science, technology, or politics from that TED talk or NPR show that so interested you.

When I'm not at work, rehearsal, or practicing/writing or working out, I'm socializing with a fairly varied set of social circles. Some of these are left-wing wackos, anarchists, communists, and various social justice types. Others may sympathize but are more interested in *where the party at*. Others are more chilled out intellectual types. (Sometimes you just wanna play some scrabble.) All are great: balance is important.
What I’m doing with my life
My main projects right now involve a rock band* and some big loud brass bands people dance to. There are 3 of the latter type, one for raucous dance parties, Balkan style, another for protestin', and, because I like to be busy, I just started a new multi-genre booty-shakin' band based here in the Mission.

For my day job, after many years as a teacher, I recently changed careers to tech, working for a pretty cool database company. It's a very different world. Since tech people get to sleep late, I've been getting to going out to more shows these days.

Riding my bike, sometimes quite far, is my meditation. No, I never wear the clown-suit.

*Wherein I write music where lots of the chords and rhythms aren't typical in rock.
I’m really good at
Learning to play that song you like.

Listening. Being "emotionally available". (Really. I gots references in these regards.)
The first things people usually notice about me
Besides the obvious (big nose), I'm not really sure, but many people are unsurprised to learn that I'm from the East coast.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
books: Another Country, Century of the Wind, Lolita, Love in the Time of Cholera, Reservation Blues, The Master and Margarita, The Poisonwood Bible, The Stranger, Midnight's Children, Kindred, Oryx and Crake, The Blind Assassin, The Road, Pigeons on the Grass, Parable of the Sower, The Inheritance of Loss, White Tiger, What is the What, The Dispossessed, The Ominvore's Dilemma, Fast Food Nation, Feminism is for Everybody, Autobiography of Malcolm X, Patriarchy and Accumulation on a World Scale, Huevos Verdes con Jamon, HP3-7, Hunger Games, Sandman comics.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is the only love story that has ever felt convincing to me.

music: Boban Markovic, Rebirth Brass Band, Fela Kuti, Nina Simone, Tom Ze, Savages, ... ok, fine, Radiohead too.

Actually, I generally find this is not a good indication of whether I'll get along with someone, as long as we're both open-minded. I'll try your recommendations if you'll try mine. :-)

I got whole-hog addicted to the whole Stark/Lannister/Targaryan/et al. drama, both the books and the show. If those names mean nothing to you, please carry on.

Re: TV in general. I don't own one. But I've started caving in and netflixing Breaking Bad, Orange is the New Black.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Besides kinky sex??

Lots. My mind is constantly racing, whether it's breaking down music into its elements, big things like contemplating social, cultural, political, technological changes and trends, or my own world, and why people I know do the things they do. I'm always absorbing information from around me (I don't *intend* to eavesdrop!) and I can't tune out things like TV in a bar or background music (woah-- a 7#9 chord!). How does anyone read and listen to music at the same time?
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I'm not a very private person. If there's something you want to know, just ask!
