THAT SAID -- In my off hours: in the past few years getting deeper into the music world (as guitarist and vocalist) - performing and recording with an up-and-coming "Americana"/rock band; singing in a jazz chorus; bluegrass jamming; open mic-ing; summer "music camping" .
AND OF COURSE -- seeking my mate here on OKC
-- coming up with clever band names
-- writing unnecessarily verbose profiles
-- at times, thinking too much
-- vibrato (just ask)
-- My "soulful eyes"
... these days reading mostly The New Yorker, the Times and the Onion (and AMNew York :-)); remembered favorites include Updike, Cheever, Bellow, Nabokov, T.C. Boyle, Flannery O'Connor, Garcia Marquez, Philip Roth, Virginia Woolf (my college thesis subject!), Joyce, Henry James, Emily Bronte, Dickens, Mark Twain, David Sedaris, Proust, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky;); Will S., Chekhov, Sam Shepard, Mamet, Tennessee W., Aristophanes (once played G.W. Bush in a modern -- R-rated :-) -- adaptation of Lysistrata); and assorted nonfiction: Hitchens, Oliver Sacks, bios of musicians and writers
... movies: as with any art form, quality matters more than genre. These days it's mostly your basic indie/quirky IFC/Angelica/BAM fare. Some -- again random -- classic favorites include The Graduate; Godfathers 1 and 2; Kubrick; Altman; Coen Bros.; Borat; Caddyshack; Tom Jones; Psycho; Birds; District 9; Blair Witch Project; Mel Brooks; Woody Allen; Werner Herzog; Rohmer; Truffault; Scorcese; Stop Making Sense; Woodstock; Gimme Shelter; Piaf; West Side Story; Religulous; Argo; Searching for Sugarman; American Hustle...[Note: I had a lot of fun trashing Zero Dark Thirty on FB.]
... shows: I'm not much of a stay-at-home, but I try not to miss, or at least tape, Jon Stewart and Bill Maher; and also go for Sundance and IFC films.
...music: As they say, too many to list (by now nearly 10,000 tracks in my iPod, not counting the Teach Yourself Croatian lessons). Grew up with classic rock (when it wasn't yet classic) and have managed to delve into a wide assortment of genres since. A sampling: Neil Young, Clapton, Dylan, Allman Bros., Creedence, B.B. King, David Byrne, Lou Reed, Dead, Hendrix, Led Zep, S. R. Vaughn, Elvis Costello, Carlos Santana, Richard Thompson, John Prine, Simon & and that Whatshisname fellow, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Osborne, Lucinda Williams, Annie Lennox, Alison Krauss, Gillian Welch, Angelique Kidjo; Carter Family; Satchmo, Trane, Miles, Diz, Monk, Ella, Chet Baker; Mahler, Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Chopin; Mississippi John Hurt, Gary Davis, John Lee Hooker; Juan Luis Guerra; Tito Puente; King Sunny Ade; Bob Marley.
-- Not exactly a "foodie" but Indian and Asian are my weekend staples. I do TRY to eat healthily and open-mindedly, while, admittedly, remaining easily confused/bemused by all the fads.
-- my friends-for-life
-- music stuff: my guitars (electric and acoustic, and their accompanying gizmos); my vocal cords; my swingin' sense of rhythm
-- an electronic gadget or two
-- common courtesy (my own and others' -- there should always be room for one more on that rush hour train)
-- my LIBIDO
-- I've lost count
-- my next travel (or film-going) adventure, and my ideal companion on that trip
-- random jokey concerns: e.g., Where did all those Justins, Jasons and Joshes suddenly come from? Why do so many young upscale women end their spoken statements with either a question or a growl (aka "vocal fry")?
