My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
A work in progress.

An exile from the Ozarks, I've been in Seattle for five years now doing graduate work. I study dead Roman things. Choosing academia as a profession has made me wonder if I'll ever own a Harley and hit the open road.

I'm a straightforward, pragmatic guy with a darker sense of humor than most. I'd like to think of myself as being easy-going and accessible. I'd also like to think of myself as looking like Cary Grant, so the quality of my assessments do have finite limits.

In any case, rather than try to earnestly sell my virtues -- which I can assure you are legion, I SWEAR, even if they remain unenumerated here -- I'll just say hit me up. I'm entertaining, even when I'm a flaming trainwreck of flaming trainwreck death.

I'm good with me. Took me a while to get there, but there you go.

Man, I seriously need to update these pictures.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
The seemingly endless death-march known as "graduate school". It's like the French Foreign Legion, just with books. March or die, mes enfants. During this process, I have found that I thoroughly enjoy teaching. Who knew.

Considering pursuing a sommelier certification on the side, as well.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Drinking wine. I've got that one mastered.

Oh, and wandering around a foreign city with just a map and an unrestrained sense of curiousity.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
My roguishly handsome good looks.

Wait, make that my sardonic sense of humor.

Some examples. My tastes tend to be somewhat sweeping and diverse. I don't mean that in an "I'm oh-so-eclectic" sort of way. I mean that in "Seriously, you don't have that kind of time and I could go on for hours" kind of way.

Books: Homage to Catalonia - my favorite Orwell. Watchmen. Dune. The Name of the Rose. Dracula. A Song of Ice and Fire. Flashman. Patrick O'Brian. And a lot of academic stuff no one has heard of. I compulsively read stuff online, as well. The Atlantic and Andrew Sullivan in particular.

Film: Lawrence of Arabia. Yojimbo. Nosferatu. Blade Runner. Henry V. The Searchers. The Big Lebowski. Big Trouble in Little China. The Third Man.

Shows: Sons of Anarchy. The Wire. Game of Thrones. I currently have a love/hate relationship with The Walking Dead. Listen to the Men in Blazers podcast religiously.

EDIT: True Detective has been astounding. If you don't watch it, you really should.

Music: Motorhead. My Bloody Valentine. Jane's Addiction. The Pogues. Iron Maiden. Social Distortion. Tom Waits. David Bowie. The Clash. Sisters of Mercy.

Right now I am on a Black Sabbath kick.

EDIT: Still on the Sabbath kick. Iommi's riffs remain epic.

Food: Sushi. Indian. BBQ. Ethiopian. Greek. Turkish. Ah, hell, just give me a glass of wine and I'm good.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
Wine.
Travel.
Did I mention wine?
Books.
Did I mention books?
Oh, and books.
Hell, I've lost count now.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Travel. I'm pretty much at my happiest out on the road, and the idea of setting up shop abroad -- particularly southern Europe -- is very appealing to me.

How long until pitchers and catchers report.

Using language with economy.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
I'm not sure I have a "typical" Friday, to be honest. I'm out some nights, and stay home others. I can give you assurances none of my activities involve a bail bondsman.

However, sometimes on weekend mornings I'll go to the George and Dragon to watch Arsenal play. Nothing starts your day right like a pint at 10 AM.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
If you post it on the internet, it's not really private, is it? I'll have to decline this, although you might be able to tease it out of me over a drink or three.

Offer a few tips to help matches win you over.
. . .the idea of spending time splitting a bottle of wine and having a conversation sounds appealing to you. You might just end up with a fiercely loyal friend before it's all over with, and that can be pretty damned rare in this day and age.
