My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
I have no idea how to write a good self -summary. And, I don't think I've ever read one. And, I'm glad for that. I worry about people who are too-easily summarizable. I can't wait for the time when our culture realizes that introducing ourselves with self-summaries is not a very good facilitator of social life.

So, let's just do something simple and fun.* Want to compare slices from our favorite pizza joints? Or go for some kind of exotic ice cream? Or go look at art? Or go hear some music? Or buy a bag of dog treats and go to a park to make some new canine friends? Any other ideas?

* There's a dating site that encourages this kind of thing, but it doesn't seem to have that many actual users. I think it's a great idea. IMO, the truly good thing about online dating is that it opens us to lots of possible connections that wouldn't have existed otherwise. So, thanks, OKC, even if I don't like self-summaries.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Teaching philosophy. Playing guitar. Exploring the city. Trying not to let the important things slip.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Making pasta salads. I rarely blow my own horn, but the fact is that most people who taste one of my pasta salads go back for seconds.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Don't know. Abundant hair?
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Help your potential matches find common interests.
Reading: Some of the classics of ancient philosophy never get old to me, stuff like Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics and Plato's Republic. As much as I love to read, I don't gush too much about favorite books. Mystery novels for light reading. My favorite magazine is the New Yorker. I like when I find myself absorbed in an article that didn't immediately look interesting but takes me by surprise.

Movies: I don't go to the movies nearly enough....Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Spinal Tap, the Royal Tanenbaums, James Bond. Horror is not my thing.

Food: Japanese, Italian, Thai, Chinese, Mexican, Korean, Vietnamese, an occasional good steak, and always a good breakfast. Orange juice and coffee in the morning; green tea; red wine or beer every now and then. No potatoes, ever.

Music: Tons of stuff. Lots of jazz (but no "smooth jazz"). Rock, yes--classic and newer, well-known and obscure, accessible and challenging. I like classical music but don't listen to enough. Very little country. Very little music that is all electronic. Pretty much no rap/hip-hop.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
Here are the six foods I would really, really much prefer to have rather than not have:
1. black olives
2. not-from-concentrate orange juice
3. sushi, specifically fresh salmon
4. good pizza
5. matzo brei
6. coffee
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
How jazz musicians think about music; the fragile and strong points of civilization; how to be a better teacher; virtue and ethics; finishing my Ph.D.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
No ritual. I could be out hearing music, out to dinner with friends, at home, or at the gym.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I think of "Jewish" as my ethnicity. (Hence, the "other" above.) For me, this doesn't require that I believe in the religion or avoid spare ribs in Chinese restaurants.
