The Guild Cinema is presenting a FREE screening (on DVD) of
Werner Herzog's Lessons of Darkness (1992, 54 minutes) for
subscribers to their e-mail list. (I am one)
The film will be shown at 11PM, Saturday August 4

Although this will be a private event, I am welcome to bring friends
who are not on the mailing list.

So who wants to go???

"For those of you who may not be familiar with the work of Werner
Herzog, his most recent film, Rescue Dawn, is playing in theaters at
the moment. Lessons of Darkness has several factors which make it a
film of interest. One is that it is neither documentary nor
fiction;
Herzog has indeed filmed post-Gulf War Kuwait, but the context of
the images is left to the viewer to interpret. The cinematography,
whether aerial or on ground is stunning, often accompanied by haunting
pieces by composers from Mahler to Arvo Part. The ravaged landscape itself
provides a sublime reminder of the impact of human creatures upon
the earth. On the "big screen," Lessons of Darkness should be quite
amazing."

Hope you can make it!

Police v. Firemen

Jul 8, 2007

So I was thinking, you ever have a cop pull by you sirens blaring, and as you pull over what do you think??? I am guessing it is usually something like, "this sucks" or " i wonder what there f'n up to now, or some other expletive as to there interference into your day, no matter how slight, even if it just meant you missed the light and have to wait for the next cycle, usually I think most people find it annoying at the least.
now, compare that to an ambulance, we might offer a silent prayer or blessing, hoping that everyone is okay, we feel a concern, however mild, for the person whose life could be slipping by. This is also true of a fire-truck, we gladly pull over, we think about how brave the men and woman are, "true heros" we might think to ourselves, proud.

So why the discrepancy, was it always like that, Fireman are heros it is true, risking there lives to save not only our lives but our property as well. A true hero is right, bold and brave. (( ever notice that there are not any ugly firemen??)) And the ambulance, well everyone in the ambulance is sworn to save a life, trying to save a life at that very moment, and there is a strong possibility that for one of the people inside the life that they are trying to save is there own.
but what about the cop, we assume that he is rushing to go enter some-ones home, destroy there property, stick his nose into the privacy of someone. We guess that at some point the man in that car will use excessive force, and that even if he is after a legitimate criminal somehow it does not make up for the number of parking citations, and tickets for broken tail lights.

When did the police stop being heros, they have become for many americans the enemy, they have become the representation of an oppressive regime that have diluted the constitution of our united states. they are the mark of how our basic liberties are threatened. We no longer assume that whoever they catch will be given a fair trial. It it never occurs to us that they would serve and protect anyone. (except the establishment that over 70% of us resent).
