I'm a philosophy graduate student, so I spend most of my time
either reading or writing. I usually spend a few hours each day
hanging out in coffee shops. I have a lot of bonsai trees. I love
to go for walks, both with people and by myself. I really enjoy
baking, though I don't do it as much as I wish i would. My friends
and I have a very casual band (no performances, just playing
together for fun), and I love making and listening to music. When
its time to take a break, i like to smoke a bit and watch movies or
a good TV show. I'm a college football fan, and I'm mildly
interested in other sports.
Good conversation, whether about books, movies, politics, or
whatever else, is very important to me. An ideal evening for me is
spent with a few drinks and enough people to have a nice
stimulating back and forth.
What I’m doing with my life
I suppose this is already cleared up above. I'm studying for a
Ph.D.; I want to be a professor when I'm done. Otherwise I'm just
really enjoying living in San Francisco, trying to broaden my
intellectual horizons beyond the stuff I work on, and pruning or
watering my trees.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
There are way too many philosophy books to list, so I'll just give
the few I really love: Kant's Critique of Pure Reason, Frege's
Foundations of Arithmetic, and Wittgenstein's Tractatus.
My favorite other books (I do mostly read philosophy these days,
though I wish that weren't true) are Portrait of the Artist as a
Young Man, The Sound and the Fury, The Picture of Dorian Gray, The
Metamorphosis, and Fraulein Else. I liked Tolkien a lot as a
preteen, so I still enjoy reading him for nostalgia's sake from
time to time.
For some reason I have a really hard time picking favorite movies,
and I'd likely give a different list if you asked me a second time.
I like all kinds of movies, both those that are really well done
and those that are just thoughtless escapes.
Shows: Seinfeld, Six Feet Under, The Wire, Curb Your Enthusiasm. (I
also like watching really trashy TV every once in a while...)
A few of my favorite musical artists: Radiohead, John Prine,
Gillian Welch, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Magnetic Fields, Pedro
the Lion. I love when people introduce me to new music, and I'm
pretty open to most genres.
Food: Sushi, sandwiches and pastries.
The six things I could never do without
Food, water, shelter, The Critique of Pure Reason, regular physical
contact, stimulating conversation.
On a typical Friday night I am
At a bar with a few friends.
